Chapter 18

Dr Morgan gave Stanley a cuddle before we left her office. We went straight to Blythe’s house to see how she was getting on with the spellbook. And I wanted to let her know about Stanley and the flowers.

We found her in the living room having a chat with Trent.

She stood at our arrival and looked at Stanley. “Get here right now. I want to look at you.”

Stanley padded over to her. “I had an X-ray. I could see all my bones. It was awesome! Dr Morgan said I’m in excellent health.”

Blythe picked him up and stared into his eyes. Stanley stared back. After a few seconds, she gave him a satisfied nod and declared, “The good doctor is right. You are in perfect health. Could you do me a favour? Trent said you didn’t go to the Mooncrest Café. He can’t come to Brimstone and miss out on that. Can you take him there now, please? Have anything you want to eat and drink. It’s all on me.”

It was clear to me she wanted Trent out of the house. It was clear to Stanley too because he said, “Of course. We’ll go there now.” He jumped out of her arms and landed on Trent’s lap. I had no idea he could leap so far. “Trent, you’ll love the café. And I’ll tell you about my X-ray. Do you know what one is?”

Trent shook his head. “Did it hurt?”

“Not at all. I’ll tell you about it on the way. Come on.” He jumped off Trent’s lap and jogged out of the room. Trent was after him in a flash.

Once we’d heard them leave the house, Blythe beckoned me over to the sofa. She took a seat and said, “I’ve got something to tell you about Brigid’s book.”

I sat next to her.

Blythe explained, “While I was talking to Trent, I managed to gather some information about where Brigid has lived over the years. That helped me to break down some of the codes she used according to the towns she was in at that time. She used a mixture of town names and landmarks as substitutes for words.” She sighed. “It’s going to take me a while to get through the whole book, but I won’t give up.”

“What have you deciphered so far? Anything useful?”

“I’m not sure about useful, but it is disturbing.” She picked up the book and pointed to the first page. “This refers to her early life. It didn’t take me long to work these words out. It details Brigid’s training as a witch, and the first spells she cast. But as the years progress, her spells change. And not for the better.”

A tingle of apprehension ran down my spine. “What did she do?”

“Brigid cast a lot of curses on those creatures who crossed her. She hasn’t gone into detail about who crossed her or what they did, but she’s given a lot of information about the effects of her curses. She’s quite gleeful about the pain she inflicted.
