Brando left his office and headed for his oldest brother’s one. Ricardo was holed up inside, working overtime, doing Salvatore’s job as well as his own. Brando had offered to lessen Ricardo’s workload by dealing with the clients, but his pigheaded brother had refused, stating that Brando would intimidate them. Brando thought that was rich coming from Ricardo, who scared the shit out of most people, even more so now. His brother’s temper was growing worse, his huge workload probably causing it. If anything, Brando thought he could do a better job interacting with the clients, but convincing Ricardo of that was almost impossible. His brother was a control freak, who needed to learn to delegate jobs better.

Brando went to knock on the door, intending on telling Ricardo just that, but instead he lowered his hand, his other brother coming to mind. What he saw on Jagger’s face ... it was like looking in a mirror, the pain carved into his brother’s features eerily familiar. What had been done to Jagger at the D’Angelo house? Had they abused Jagger like the Padre had abused him? Or maybe it was to do with Jagger’s job. He wondered whether his brother was forced to train the women, because if he had been, Brando was going to have a talk with the D’Angelo Don about it—with his fists.

Wanting to ask Jagger about it, he turned and headed back down the office passageway. He cut across the lounge, entering the west wing, where Jagger was staying. Raised voices came from Jagger’s room. He placed an ear to the door, ignoring a servant as the woman shuffled past him.

“I’m sick of you treating me like a sex toy!” Jagger yelled. “I wasn’t put on this goddamn planet for your pleasure or anyone else’s. I’m a fucking human being.”

“Calm down, baby,” a female said. “I didn’t mean anything by it. You’re overreacting.”

“I’m not overreacting! You’re just like your sick uncle—”

“I am nothing like him! So stop treating me like I am.”

“Then stop treating me like your personal fuck toy.”

“Dio! You’re infuriating! I’m getting sick and tired of you misconstruing everything I do. You need to see a psychiatrist, because this really isn’t healthy, Jagger.”

“I’m not seeing a quack, so get off my case.”

“But you need help.”

“No, I need you to leave me the hell alone.” Something banged behind the door.

“Jagger! Put that down. I’m not leaving.”

“Why not? I’m making your life miserable.”

“I didn’t mean to say that, you upset me.”

“You upset me by saying it.”

“I’ve apologized enough for it. Please, just get some help so you can get better.”

“Get it into your head that I’m never going to get better, things will only get worse.”

“Not if you get help!”

Jagger started swearing. “I’ve had enough, I’m going out.”

“Not like this, you’ll do something stupid.”

“I already have. I was stupid for thinking our relationship could work.”

Brando stepped back as the door flung open.

Jagger stopped in the doorway, jolting as his eyes landed on Brando. “What are you doing here?”

Brando went to answer, but instead his attention shot to the woman standing behind Jagger.
