Chapter Thirty

Bodvar was at home with his ​​mother. She loved him dearly. Of all men, he was most able and most handsome in appearance. Not many people knew him to speak to. Bodvar said he did not want to be king, he said that he would rather be with him and serve him. “Are you so ensnared by this monster that you think hardly know your rights as king? But she will not thrive from now on.” Bodvar was so fierce then that the king was afraid of dealing with him. Bodvar went to the queen’s bower and he had a leather sack in his hand. The king went after him and his mother too. When Bodvar came into the chamber, he turned to Queen Hvit, and put the shrunken bag on her head and pulled it down round her neck. He struck her on the side of the head and beat her to death with various tortures and hauled her through all the streets. To many or most in the hall this was no worse than half what she deserved, yet the king took it very ill although he could do nothing. So Queen Hvit lost her worthless life.
