Tempus leads them to the hilltop, but not to either altar. They hunker down in a circle out near the brake. “Now,” the Riddler says. “Again. Jihan first. Then Crit. For Stealth. All of it.”

Crit looks at the grass centering their little circle. Strat stares at Niko, a distant look as if he’s staring at the dead, and then away, past Jihan, toward the horizon and the building storm.

“As you wish, Riddler. Niko,” Jihan says, “when the Band sewed Shamshi in that skin, something started that can’t be easily undone. Or stopped. That youth has a hand on him, guiding him, a destiny that must play out. You gave an ancient weapon to Lysis, the Theban. That poison is very old, not for men to wield. Nor should a mortal be struck down with it. If Lysis is right, and this Shamshi was wounded by that dart, he will die of it or be changed by it. And if he does not die, he will be a terrible threat – to men, perhaps to gods. The whole Sacred Band has tried to catch and kill him – and failed. If he lives still, he is very angry.”
