Chapter 11
Raine sat in the empty tavern, her feet propped on a table, her chair tilted back against the wall. She was on her third tankard of mead, but it was having little effect. She was eying a bottle of amber liquid above the bar, contemplating asking the barkeep if it was indeed an amber sting. But she would wait for her love to return, just in case it was that mythic liqueur. That drink had a fairly pronounced effect on her that she did not want to waste.
A hooded figure came through the door and Raine could tell by the way she moved it was whom she was waiting for. This one would not leave tracks in newly fallen snow. The barkeep made a move to run the figure off, but Raine waved to him and he returned to the bar. Raine did notice, however, that the figure was accompanied by two others, which was unexpected. The figure approached, gave a short bow in the Tavinter custom, and removed her hood.
“Hello, Skye,” Raine said.
Skye smiled a brilliant smile, her hazel eyes bright with pleasure. “Hello, Raine,” she said, clasping her forearm.
Raine examined the lovely young woman, pleased at the assessment. It had not been that long ago that Skye had been desperately ill and Raine had played a pivotal role in her rescue. But now she appeared healthy, her tan skin glowing, her light hair full and lively on her head, her cheeks still sharp and refined but with a blush of fitness on them now.
“Thank you for coming,” Raine said, “I was reluctant to ask you to do this for many reasons, including the fact that it is a sordid affair in which to involve the ruler of the Tavinter.”
“Hmm,” Skye said, “then you are probably going to be less than happy with those who accompany me.”
The two figures flanking Skye removed their hoods, revealing two women as stunning as Skye. The one on the left had flashing dark eyes and dark hair.
“Your Highness,” Raine said wryly, and Dallan bowed to her in the Ha’kan greeting of one royalty to another. Dallan was the heir to the Ha’kan throne, the Princess of an all-female race of warriors, scholars, and priestesses, a race that rivaled the Empire in terms of military and political power.
“Raine,” Dallan said formally, “and I believe you know Rika as well.”
Raine turned to the other woman, a very handsome lady who acted as Dallan’s right hand. “Ah yes,” Raine said, “the future First General of the Ha’kan.” Raine examined her. “You look even larger than the last time I saw you.”
“Thank you,” Rika said, trying to hide her pleasure at the compliment.
Raine shifted her attention back to Dallan, who despite her attempt to maintain her royal dignity wilted beneath Raine’s amused stare. “You didn’t expect us to let her come alone, did you?”
“I don’t even know why I’m surprised,” Raine said. “Please, have a seat.” She waved to the barkeep, who ran over to her side.
