Chapter Fourteen: Carlin
IN OCTOBER, KYLE AND Bryce invited them to fly out to Los Angeles for a private screening of an early version of Kyle's still untitled movie. The director was debating with himself about the ending, and evidently he wanted some input from the screenwriters. Kyle's co-writer, Chance Lanconi, flatly refused to fly to LA, but Kyle persuaded the director to let Bryce, Stoney, and Carlin come with him.
Then they might all fly out to New York and do another screening for Chance, the one who'd really written ninety percent of the script. Carlin would have never guessed how little writing a famous screenwriter like Kyle actually did, if not for how often Stoney grumbled about it behind his back.
"We're not supposed to say, but Chance has that fear of flying," Kyle said. "He'll never leave Manhattan."
Carlin was excited to see Los Angeles and maybe even New York City itself. His mother would have been so proud. So proud, and yet she probably would have gotten sick and needed him to stay at home.
Better not to think about his mother. She'd done her best. Whatever the world thought of her, Carlin knew that much.
"They invited us? Me and Stoney? Are you sure they wanted us?" Carlin couldn't help but ask questions. Everything Stoney knew about making movies came from lip-syncing his way through a music video. Carlin knew less than that.
"I told him you two wouldn't talk to the tabs on a bet," Kyle said. "You'd be perfect. Some of my model friends are already out there. They'll have some ideas too. It's going to be a right party."
"What ideas do you need?" Stoney asked. "End it like Hamlet. Everybody dies in the end in a big fucking shoot-out."
Kyle smiled a quirky little smile at the comparison between his script and Shakespeare. "That's definitely one of the options."
The movie was about a cadre of young models who hunted down and killed child sex traffickers. There was a revenge motive. There was a baby who'd been stolen and sold and had to be saved. There were police who wanted to cover up the whole scandal because of a corrupt officer who liked getting free tastes of young stuff. In other words, it was quite the melodrama, and the director didn't mind leaking the kind of rumors that allowed movie-goers to believe the story might be true.
He just didn't want the fucking ending leaked. He couldn't be confident of that if he tested it on the public.
No chance of Carlin and Stoney speaking to the yellow press. Stoney was still angry about the Investig8! article. A few days after it was posted and then reposted and linked endlessly by the other tabloids, Stoney and Carlin had taken the Eurostar back to London for a holiday. They'd partied everywhere they could be seen partying, although they walked right past the photographers without saying a word. The two of them arm-in-arm at Chiltern Firehouse was enough to put the lie to the claim that Stoney was afraid to come back to London.
