The Oxford Handbook of Roman Epigraphy tells us procuratorships increased for equestrians from the time of Augustus and gives us many more examples:66

• Volusius Maecianus, mid-second century, procurator of the imperial libraries at Rome in a life that ended at the very pinnacle of an equestrian career: the praefectus of Egypt and the grain supply in Rome. He was later appointed to the senate.

• From the late second century: C. Iulius Philippus was promoted to equestrian rank and became an imperial procurator. His son was elected to the senate demonstrating how a family could advance over more than one generation.

• A surviving letter from Marcus Aurelius to an equestrian official, Domitius Marsianus makes him a procurator in Gaul at 200,000 sesterces.
