ALI

I’ve organized a do-over of Anna and Grace’s best friends meeting their love-interests by inviting them and Katherine to a gig. I only perform once or twice a month these days, but when I do, I give it my all—not that I’ve ever given any less than I possibly could on the stage.

On gig day, my vibe is always different, as though my body and my mind know to conserve energy and let me shine after dark. I start my set with “Closer to Fine” which, since I started playing it with the kids all the time, is no longer a lesbian anthem in my mind, but for this crowd tonight it sure still is.

To my surprise, Katherine has become a regular at yoga on Wednesday evenings. She seems to have really taken to it, and I’m glad for her. We’ve struck up a kind of friendship, meeting once a week. She tells me about her day and I tell her about mine. I know she tries to avoid the Susan subject, but it sometimes slips into conversation, because how could it not? Katherine’s pain is still so raw and, now that I’ve gotten to know her a little bit, she doesn’t strike me as the kind of person to get over something like that quickly. She’s a dweller.

I shoot her a few poignant glances during my set. She looks like she’s enjoying it. Anna still hollers the way she used to after every song. When I end my set with “Anna Begins” for old times’ sake, she nearly goes mental.

As I make my way off the stage and try to reach my friends, a young woman intercepts me.

“Ali,” she says, addressing me as if she knows me. “I’ve been waiting for weeks for you to play another gig. It was worth the wait.” She flashes me a wide smile—one that, a few years ago, I would have immediately accepted as an open invitation.

“Thank you.” This girl must be mid-twenties, tops. I don’t remember seeing her at any of my previous gigs, though I may pay less attention these days. “I appreciate that.” Perhaps, because this is a tiny venue, she only just tonight scraped together the courage to approach me.

“Can I buy you a drink?” she asks, then stretches out her hand, “I’m Heather.”

I’m reluctant to accept. Not only because it feels inappropriate, what with her being so young, but also because I can feel Anna, Grace and Katherine making eyes at me. “Pleased to meet you, Heather.” I give her my best, non-seductive smile. “That’s very nice of you to offer, but my friends over there”—I point at their table—“are waiting for me.”

“Oh.” She seems to deflate in front of me, and I feel so sorry for her, I backtrack.

“Okay, just a quick one, then.”

“Yay!” A new life force seems to grab hold of her and she elbows us a way to the bar. Before following her, I shoot what I hope is a very apologetic look at the others.
