Chapter Ten

Carmen insisted on paying for everything. She hadn’t cashed in her newly acquired Prescott stock and probably never would, but she had a little nest egg she’d been saving in hopes she could one day throw her only child a proper wedding. Ana’s social status certainly wouldn’t allow for that now. Any wedding she and the good doctor had would require more than Carmen could afford. But she could afford a nice engagement party.

Carmen opted to have the party in Ana’s home, rather than a restaurant. Even the nicest restaurant would most likely be crowded and noisy with servers interrupting conversations. Carmen wanted something more intimate where she could get to know Kris’s friends and relatives. After all, they’d be family soon enough.

Ana had a long dining table that seated twelve and a big kitchen island to serve the food buffet style. There was plenty of seating in the living room as well. It would be perfect. Carmen was sure of it.

They’d invited fifteen people. Kris’s parents, an aunt who lived in the city, and a few good friends from the hospital were all coming. On Ana’s side, Carmen wasn’t sure who was coming. She’d been coy about it, saying she’d invited a few friends from work. That was typical. Ana rarely gave details about her life, even to her own mother.

Carmen didn’t even know about Kris until she’d caught them in bed together four months into their relationship. She knew better than to ask too many questions. Ana didn’t react well when Carmen tried to push her on facts: things like, did she love Kris, or was this just a fling? Another woman she would eventually push away, or the woman of her dreams? Or both?

Carmen didn’t really have to ask, though. She knew the answer before Ana had spoken a word. That’s why she’d been so surprised by the news of the engagement. Surprised but happy. Maybe Ana had turned a corner in her life. Carmen hoped with all of her heart that it was true.

Ana rushed into the apartment. “Sorry, I’m late!” She pulled her sweater over her head as she ran into the bedroom.

Carmen just smiled. Everything was ready, and her daughter hadn’t even noticed. She looked at her watch. Thirty minutes and counting.
