Chapter Fourteen

DAMIEN PARKED HIS CAR beside Maggie and Angel’s bed and breakfast and looked around. Although today was overcast, it was a beautiful place nestled in the woods with the lake behind it. He’d almost canceled coming, but after a week of work and emotional upheaval, he’d realized it might just be what he needed—a quiet, possibly boring place to reflect on the mess that was now his life. The front door opened, and Angel waved and jogged out, followed by Maggie and a black lab.

Damien opened the car door.

“Damn, Damien. Sweet ride. You always have the best taste in cars. Let me drive it, please?” Angel walked around the Jag, admiring it.

“No.”

“Look, I got my license. Just a quick spin; you can ride shotgun.” Angel ran a hand over the hood, stroking it like a beautiful woman.

“Not no, but hell, no. And quit; you’re putting fingerprints on it.”

“Stop arguing, you two. I’m so glad you came. We cleared space, so you can park your car in there.” Maggie smiled and pointed to the barn that now served as a garage.

“But, Mags, he isn’t sharing. It’s a wet dream on wheels,” Angel huffed with a grin. “At least let me pull it into the garage.” The dog barked, wagging his tail, as if in agreement. “See, even Graffiti thinks you should let me drive it.”

“Angel, there’s no way in hell I’d let you behind the wheel of my Jag. The last time you drove my damn car, you totaled it.” He threw his suitcase at him and got back into the car to move it.

“You sure hold a grudge. I was sixteen when I totaled that Mustang. Fine. But don’t be surprised if I tag your car,” Angel threatened with a good-natured grin.

Damien’s eyes narrowed. “Touch my car with a goddamned paint can, and I’ll sue your ass. I don’t care if you are my brother. I saw what you did to Harley’s van.”

“Hey, she asked for it! Sssssssst.” Angel made a spray can motion with his index finger.

Scowling, Damien flipped him off and pulled in to the garage. For God’s sake, he and Angel were grown men, but when they were together, the sibling rivalry never let up. He stepped outside, hit the button to close the electric garage door, and for the first time in days, he genuinely laughed. On the door Angel had spray-painted Marry me, Maggie.

Damien walked toward the house. Maggie’s dark hair was pulled on top of her head, the gray streaks at the temple not quite contained in her messy ponytail. She was a beautiful, petite woman with amazing green eyes that gazed with adoration at Angel. Why, only God knew. Angel was as insufferable as ever. But damn if he wasn’t glad to see his kid brother. He gave Maggie a hug and a kiss. She always smelled of warm vanilla. It was nice, but he missed the smell of summer peaches.

“You two need to talk. Angel, take Damien down to the dock and show him the lake.
