Chapter Twenty-Seven

Corey

Max walks in front of the line of photos on my living room walls. They represent the growth of my children and us as a family. A couple of earlier shots of Gretchen have all four of us together.

“The kids are adorable. They look happy and healthy.”

“Thank you. It’s a struggle at times. When Gretchen has them, I worry the entire time. Her babysitter is good, but it’s different than being watched by your mother.” I shrug. “Although, in this case, it’s better than being watched by their mother, and this is all they’ve known.”

“Do you have enough evidence to prove they should be with you full-time? In a custody case, you need clear and convincing evidence which is more than a preponderance of the evidence and less than beyond a reasonable doubt, which should work in your favor.”

How did I forget his father is an attorney? “I have documented the times she’s supposed to have them. When she cancels. When she brings them home early or leaves them with the sitter. She put Miles on medication with no doctor’s diagnosis of ADHD, so I took them to the pediatrician and stopped him from taking the pills. And now, I have her on an audio recording admitting to using drugs and drinking while pregnant.”

He tilts his head as if he’s thinking about different angles. “You won’t be able to use the recordings as they were taken without her knowledge. Unless you can get the judge to allow them.”

“I know there’s a risk that they can’t be used in court, but they’ll be a strong motivation for her to keep things out of the public eye.” I slump onto the sofa. “I don’t think she wants the kids. I think she uses them as accessories. They make her look like a good person.” I use air quotes when saying the word good. “The information she’s admitted to will ruin her reputation if it gets out.”

“Very true.” Max walks to the sofa and settles in a few inches away from me. “So, your plan is to get an attorney, file the paperwork with the court, and confront her with the evidence in hopes that she caves to salvage her reputation?”

“That about sums it up.” I smile. “It would almost seem like you were raised by an attorney.”

“One of the best.” He frowns. “Things have not been the best between my father and me, but he’s making an attempt to make amends.”

“Are you satisfied with his attempts?” I grasp his hand and lace our fingers together. Touching him seems natural, like an extension of myself.

“I am. He’s apologized, and he’s trying. He’s working with a Senator to pass legislation that will help the LGBTQ+ community. He’s retiring and wants this to be his legacy versus what he’s contributed so far. Time will tell if he continues to follow this path, but I believe he will. I don’t sense any underlying schemes in his actions.”

I shake my head. “It’s crazy how different our families reacted.
