Chapter 17 – A Race Against Time

Arusha, Tanzania.

"You really are an incredible woman," laughed Morgan as he trussed Ruth’s second victim of the evening, Glenn stood in shocked silence, he felt like the weak link, he had been caught so easily, he had jeopardised their rescue attempt, and he had needed saving by his amazing girlfriend.

"Where’s the guard?" asked Morgan as he hunted through the unconscious man’s pockets and grinning produced a bundle of heavy keys.

"Locked in his hut," she laughed, "Bound and gagged and still probably out cold... I just hope I didn't kill him."

Morgan shook his head dismissively, "That’s not an issue... now, let’s get these kids out of here before any more company arrives."

Gathering his scattered wits Glenn grabbed the keys and hurried across to the first of the locked doors,

“I hope these are the right keys," he told Ruth as he felt her close to his side, “I don't know how to thank you baby," he smiled as he felt her lean into him, “I really thought I was dead... that guy wasn’t playing."

“Don’t thank me," she whispered, “I know you would have done the same."

Glenn nodded, he would, and he knew it for sure deep inside, "A result," he cried as the fourth key he tried began to turn and with a solid click the lock sprung open.

Tentatively he tugged at the steel loop and the door began to swing slowly, as the light flooded in he felt his heart reach out, huddled in the corner were three terrified young girls, their eyes wide and wild, like white beacons shining out of the darkness.

Ruth walked in slowly uttering soft assurances in Kiswahili and Glenn saw the girls relax visibly.

“I’ll get the next door," he called quietly and stepped aside to try the next lock.

Five minutes later they had liberated a group of eight trembling children, "Do you know a girl called Anita?" asked Morgan as softly as he could but was met with wide eyes and closed lips.

"Sorry Morgan... I think you’re frightening them, let me try," whispered Ruth, Morgan nodded, so often he forgot that his disfigured face silenced the children that he met.

Ruth squatted close to the oldest girls and asked again quietly, they dragged their eyes away from Morgan and nodded in unison before one whispered, Ruth turned slowly with pain in her eyes.

"They took her away this afternoon... she must have been in the Prado," Glenn saw the tears well in her eyes, she was holding herself responsible, “I was close enough to touch but I didn't know," she fought with her emotion.

"What about the twins?" asked Glenn, he had studied the group of frightened youngsters but didn't see any resemblances.

Again Ruth questioned the girls, and again they nodded.

"They’ve gone too," she translated, "This morning early."

Morgan drew Glenn aside and led him towards the door.

“I want you and Ruth to get these children to safety, take them to a hotel... anywhere away from here."

Glenn nodded, "And what about you?"

Moses gave a small smile, “I have something to do here first, come back for me in an hour.
