When Allie first saw Geena behind Malorie—everyone on the team knew Malorie—she didn’t know if she was glad to see her or not. It took her a minute to figure out that she had been there for the whole match. Then she thought, What would the new Allie do? She wouldn’t act all put out. She’d be proud of herself for the way she skated, and she wouldn’t act like Geena did her a big favor by coming to her match. No, Geena was the one who’d had the opportunity to watch her play and see what a badass she was. The new Allie would be okay with a one-nighter—in fact, she’d probably prefer a one-nighter. She flashed a smile at Geena.

“Got to grab my gear bag, and I’m all set.”

Geena followed her to a bench at the other end of the room. Allie picked up her bag, turned around, and looked over Geena’s shoulder to let her know she had two shadows with the names Candy and Venus. Geena turned to face them.

“Nice to meet you ladies. Hope to see you again. Thanks so much for watching the show.”

“All set?” Allie wanted to take Geena’s hand, but Candy had her phone out and was asking to take a selfie with Geena. Allie stepped away. She’d seen all the photos of Geena with this woman and that woman on her arm. There was a different woman in almost every photo. She didn’t want to be one of them.

“Do you mind?” Geena asked her.

“No, go ahead.”

Venus and Candy got their photos, and Geena followed Allie out of the building.

“Where are you parked?” Geena asked. “Do you want to follow me to Barclay’s? It’s right down the street.”

“Is that why you chose Barclay’s? Did you know I had a match today?” Allie stopped and looked at Geena.

“I did, but then I wondered why you didn’t tell me. You look amazing.”

The intensity of Geena’s gaze caught her off guard. She started walking to her car again.

“Thanks. Let’s not talk in the parking lot. The rest of my team are going to be coming out any second. I passed Barclay’s on the way in. I’ll meet you there. That’s my car in the next row.” Allie waved her hand at the cars in the lot.

“Hey, I’m parked in the same row.”

She turned her head and looked at Geena. “You look pretty great too.” A picture of what they were probably going to be doing later flashed in her mind. She looked away. “There’s my car.”

“No way, I’m parked right next to you.”

“Why would you park way back here? This is where the teams and officials and everyone connected to the match parks, so we won’t take spaces from the paying customers. The hinterlands.”

“I was a little late, and I pulled into the first space I saw. I didn’t want to waste time looking for a space, but I didn’t miss anything. You were doing that practice thing before the game.”

“Match, and thanks for coming.
