THE NEXT MORNING WHEN Vanessa rolled out of bed, she was eager to see if her planned hiking trail would be the right one that day. She couldn't help but wonder if their last adventure had merely been a decoy, a fork in the road meant to slow them down in achieving their goal, or worse, to prevent it entirely. Yet, Robin had implied it had been a necessary part of their journey. If Emma Jane or Vanessa had been alone, neither of them would have made it out alive. She shuddered to think how many other hikers had met a grisly fate in the small home they'd found hidden deep in the mountain. She wondered how many memories had been altered over the years, if someone as strong and gifted as Emma Jane could be hypnotized so easily and not recall how she’d arrived at the cave.

Vanessa dressed quickly for what she hoped would be the day she could finally, physically be with Emma Jane, then paused. Had she actually spoken with Robin last night? Her memory was foggy, but she had the vague recollection that she'd been in Summerland at some point during her sleep. She struggled to remember what they'd discussed, but could only recall the hazy feel of him touching her cheek while giving her a cryptic pep talk. Try as she might, she couldn't remember anything else from her dream. Instead of forcing the memory she grabbed her purse and headed across the hall to Emma Jane's room.

Vanessa knocked on the door, taking a surprised step back when it opened a split second later. "Good morning. Are you ready to get some breakfast? I have a good feeling about today." Vanessa beamed. She practically chirped with excitement, although she had no reason to feel elated other than the feeling of hope Robin may or may not have left her with.

Emma Jane smiled, tilting her head. "What are you so happy about?"

Vanessa shrugged. "Beats the heck out of me. I think I had a visit from Robin last night, but if not, I had a great sleep and I'm in a super mood. A delicious breakfast with my girl is the only thing that could possibly make me feel better right now."

Emma Jane let out a short bark of laughter. "Okay, if that's what a visit from Robin can do, sign me up. I've never met the guy, but I've heard enough about him from you and Cat that I'm looking forward to it. Let's feed you and then hit the trail. I want to check out the hike you've got on your mind for today. Hopefully, it's a little bit less dangerous than yesterday's."

Vanessa nodded, but a cloud cast a shadow fell over her jubilation. If this truly was the last part of their quest, it was almost certainly going to be every bit as dangerous as the previous one, if not more so.
