General Hyakutake sat behind the desk in his headquarters tent, his helmet strapped to his head, his sword lying across his desk, sipping a cup of green tea and waiting for someone to tell him what was going on. He heard sporadic bursts of fire around his encampment, and orders being shouted, but it did not appear to him that much serious had happened. He suspected some of his guards had gotten trigger-happy and perhaps fired upon a returning patrol. He wished everything would settle down so that he could go back to sleep.

The flap to his office was pushed aside and Colonel Tsuji entered, tall and lean, dressed in his baggy jodhpurs and boots, his Nambu pistol in his hand. The kerosene lamp atop General Hyakutake’s desk cast a sheen on Tsuji’s hairless chest.

“It was an American raiding party, sir,” Colonel Tsuji said. “They came for their comrade and got him out.”

General Hyakutake’s eyes widened. “How many Americans were there?”

“Anywhere from ten to a hundred, depending on who you talk with.”

“How could they get so close without our guards seeing them? We’ll have to review our security procedures here. I take it you’ve sent troops after them.”

“Yes, sir. And we have numerous military units patrolling the area, who can prevent the Americans from either returning to their lines or reaching the sea. The Americans will not get away.”
