Antigonos II in Macedon

The firm association of Antiochos and Antigonos helped prevent Ptolemy II from too obvious an intervention in Greece against Antigonos. It therefore permitted Antigonos to recover full control of Macedon, when Pyrrhos moved on to a pointless campaign in the Peloponnese. Antigonos had to be very careful; he was the son of Demetrios, whose very unpopular Macedonian kingship had resulted in his expulsion from the kingdom, about the only successful such uprising in Hellenistic history. Antigonos therefore needed to persuade the Macedonians to accept him, and that meant returning to a traditional Macedonian kingship with a good deal of informality, in direct contrast to Ptolemy II’s new court system. Foreign ambitions were not to be undertaken, except when a threat developed, notably in Greece or the Aegean. The power of the Ptolemaic navy was the worst of such threats, but at the same time it deterred Antigonos from attacking Ptolemy’s own position in the Aegean. So the war which began in 274 BC between Antiochos and Ptolemy did not involve either Greece or Antigonos, and was largely restricted to the two kings.
