“Five-one. Control,” came Mike’s clipped tones in my ear.

“Five-one.”

“Papa Romeo Sierra two-six-zero-four linked to a known orange player. Your image matches our records.”

I was now more confused than ever.

“Six-two. Movement. Victor on Brown from Green. Plate, eight-seven Mike November one-five-seven-zero-four-two. Three up.”

“Control.”

Another car heading towards the farm, but this one had Irish plates. ‘Mike November’ identified the car as registered in County Monaghan, just over the border.

The farmhouse door opened and Tolan came out. He walked into the middle of the yard, ignoring the rain as he waited for his next guest. The UKM with the Skorpion pushed himself off the bonnet of his car and stood upright to watch the car approach the yard.

A fresh set of headlights splashed the yard as the vehicle halted by the waiting Tolan. The doors opened and three men got out. The rear passenger was about five feet seven inches tall with a full head of hair and a bushy beard. He was heavyset and wore a jacket open at the front as it couldn’t physically close over the rotund belly... a salad dodger... This new guest shook hands with Tolan, with no hesitation, then gave him a hearty slap on the back. The sound of mutual laughter reached my ears. A bit of a different reception for this visitor than the last, I reckoned as I snapped a shot of his face.

I refocused my camera lens on his two companions. These two were clean shaven and comparatively stick thin. As I watched, Tolan and his friend headed into the farmhouse, trailed by the driver. The final new face took up a position opposite UKM with Skorpion. With a flourish, he produced a small box shape from under his coat. I zoomed my camera in. It revealed the unmistakable shape of a mini Uzi, which he pointedly sat on the roof of his car. All the time facing the UKM with the Skorpion. No love lost there then. These two boys didn’t trust each other an inch.

“Control. Five-one. Tango One and two UKMs into Building One. One UKM remaining by the vehicle and armed with a mini Uzi.”

“Control.”
