An hour later, we were back on shore. Coger shot the rest of his scotch and asked if I would drive the boat back. I obliged, which meant that Christopher stayed next to me the whole time, begging to use the throttle and asking questions about everything. I was certain that Coger already answered all the same questions. And I realized why Coger wanted me to drive us back to the marina. He was tired of answering questions. Still, Iâd say he was pretty patient, for a recluse.
Being the driver of the boat also meant that Scout stayed next to me as well. He never growled or snarled or barked at me. But he stayed tense. He was a good guard dog.
Onshore, we said our goodnights and parted ways. Coger and Scout stayed on his boat, although Scout looked torn about who heâd go withâhis lifelong master or the kid he just met.
Kara and Christopher took the berth, or bedroom, belowdeck. And I slept on deck. The drug dealerâs sailboat had large, comfy sofas on deck. It wasnât a problem.
Before I crashed, I used Karaâs phone to call Fryâs hospital room again. There was no answer.
Around midnight, I heard someone stirring belowdeck. I opened my eyes. The clouds above moved slowly and loomed. There was plenty of starlight. The stars twinkled. The moon was big in the sky. The ocean swaying filled the air with a calm, serene sound. I sat up to listen to see who was stirring below. I didnât want the kid to come up here and then go wandering alone.
A figure emerged from the stairs leading belowdeck. It was Kara. She climbed up and came over to me. She wasnât in the racy clothes anymore. She changed into something else. It was sleeping attire. But as she neared me, I saw it was only a silk gown. There was only one piece. It was like a sheet-thin robe. I saw her naked silhouette in the moonlight.
I reached my hands up to her and said, âYou must be cold?â
âThen warm me up,â she said, and she slid into my arms. We laid back together. She kissed me. The boat swayed.
She ran her hands over my clothed body. She whispered to me, âLet me take your clothes off.â
I did as ordered. And we made loveâright there, in the darkness, and the starlight, and the moonlight. The boat swayed. We swayed harder.
