Miles stepped out of the children’s clothing store into the bustling food court to answer his cell phone. “Hello?”

“I’ll have that background check for you by six,” Bear said in a gruff voice. “You sure you want to do this?”

“Yes. I’m marrying her on Monday.”

“I won’t be leaving anything out,” Bear said as if giving Miles a warning.

“That’s what I’d expect from an expert. Any luck on a suitable location for the shelter?”

“I have two options for you to look at. I’ll send you the links with the pros and cons of each, but we should be able to implement a high level of security in either location.”

“Bear, I really appreciate this. This can’t be what your normal duties include.”

Bear grunted—his version of a laugh. “There are no normal duties for what I do. I’m glad to help out.”

Miles ended the call as Tessa and Rey exited the store, loaded down with several bags each. He’d insisted that Rey pick out an entirely new wardrobe. He’d experienced shopping with his sisters, so it was no shock to witness Rey’s excitement and energy when she realized that she could buy anything she wanted.

After a twenty-minute drive, they walked into the sparkly jewelry store. Miles had never bought jewelry before. This store was as foreign to him as an alien spacecraft, and he was starting to feel like the aliens were about to feast on him with how the salespeople converged. He grabbed Tessa’s hand. She looked up at him with a smile and a bat of her lashes. How could something so simple as a smile get his blood pumping through his veins like an oil rig that hit its first oil? He was falling for this girl hard. He couldn’t fight it—even if he wanted to.

“Good afternoon,” said a soft-spoken middle-aged man with thick white streaks in his hair on either side of his head like a fluffy skunk. “How can I help you this fine afternoon?”

Miles glanced outside, where dark gray clouds covered the sun in anticipation of a cleansing rain. “We’re looking for an engagement ring and wedding bands.”

The salesman stood taller. “Then you’ve come to the right place. We usually start looking at rings within a specific price range. How much were you thinking about spending?” He gave Miles a once-over and grinned.

Miles was still in the tailored suit he’d worn to the interview, so he must have looked wealthy. That one interview had been the reason he’d come to Atlanta for the weekend. It happened to coincide with the team party at Bucky’s, but from what Miles had come to understand, Bucky threw parties for the team at his home all the time.

Mason and his sisters had decided to accompany Miles to Atlanta to help him house shop and for Mason to career shop after being recently cut from the Texas Titans. The interview from the sports channel to welcome Miles to Atlanta as the new left tackle for the Patriots had turned out to be much more.
