As soon as the fielding practice was over, Nick hurried over to where most of the pitchers were tossing balls back and forth.

“Shotaro,” Nick called. “Hey! Listen!”

Shotaro barely paid him any attention.

“What is it? You finally manage to get your head out of your butt?”

“That guy Sammy saw the other day, the scout, he’s back!”

Shotaro gave a dismissive flip of the ball to his partner.

“I’m so happy for you,” he said.

“This could work out for you too,” Nick said. “There’s a chance you could get in today.”

“You know as well as I do it doesn’t matter if it was five days ago,” Shotaro shot back. “Coach doesn’t send in pitchers two games in a row.”

“He won’t send starters out two games in a row,” Nick said quickly, “but sometimes he—”

He had said the words so quickly he hadn’t thought it through. Shotaro’s pitching hand gripped the ball so tightly his knuckles turned white.

“Right,” Shotaro jumped in. “And I’m not a starter, am I?”

Nick wanted to smack himself in the head.

“I didn’t mean that,” Nick said. “I’m just saying we’ve got a chance to—”

“There’s no we today, Nick,” Shotaro said, turning back. “So how about you go do your thing and I’ll do mine. I don’t need your help.”

It hurt that Shotaro was shutting him out this way. But Shotaro was probably right. He stood little chance of pitching this game. Maybe, for now, Nick should think about himself.
