Chapter Twenty-Five

When she got back home as she put her key in the lock of her front door, it swung open. She hesitated for a few seconds before pushing the door open wider and walking in. Oliver had texted her that he’d had a call from the bank saying they needed to see him urgently.

A dog barked. In the distance, she heard the faint sound of traffic. The trees rustled in the gentle breeze.

Her heart pounded, fast, making her a little breathless. Her eyes flicked around the hallway and up the stairs. Was this another of Jake’s visitations?

She unzipped her handbag and dug inside feeling for her phone. All the time listening out for any sound that somebody was still in the house.

With her phone in her hand, she wavered about dialling 999. Instead, holding onto it, she made her way along the hallway. She looked around, everything looked the same.

Nothing had been disturbed.

Nothing out of place.

She made her way to the back door through the kitchen and unlocked it — in case she needed to escape.

Everything was as she’d left it. The tall china mugs from breakfast were still in the sink. A twenty-pound note sat on the round kitchen table where she’d left it for Oliver to pick up the dry cleaning. He’d clearly forgotten.

Moving out of the kitchen, she walked into the lounge towards the French doors, unlocking them too. As she moved back towards the hallway, she dropped her coat on the sofa.

Climbing the stairs, she was jumpy as if somebody was about to leap out at any moment.

She pushed the bedroom door open, ready to dart downstairs if there was anybody in there.

There wasn’t.

She froze in the doorway aghast at the array of photos on the bed and floor. Shit. Huge A3-size photos. All photoshopped of Jake and her together, cosying up and looking intimate. Not true. What was he up to? There were photos of Karen and her outside the coffee shop, too. She’d have to warn Karen now. She stood for a moment weighing it all up. Something occurred to her. She counted the photos. Eleven.

She stood on one of the photos. With the heel of her shoe she crushed Jake’s face until there was nothing but a huge hole in his head.

Bastard.

She checked the other rooms.

All clear.

Back in her bedroom, she perched on the end of the bed. What was she going to do about this out of control situation? The man was clearly deranged.

She paced up and down the room as Jake’s face and all the memories of that night and the past few days taunted her.

A lump swelled in her throat. Taking out her phone she called Jake. But as the number dialled a text came in.

Eleven.

The call connected. ‘What the hell are you playing at!’ she yelled.

‘When can we meet?’ he responded, ignoring her question.

She screwed up her eyes and tried to speak through her tight throat. ‘Now. I want to see you now,’ she demanded. She knew there was going to be no reasoning with him: he just seemed intent on destroying what she had.
