Thirty-Six

Kyle Lavine was tired of losing, exhausted with waiting, searching satellite images, seeking his time to strike. The call from Hydra and Jafari had jangled him. Nobody spoke to Kyle Lavine that way. If he wanted to take shit for a living, he would have stayed in the US Army. His old Delta Force unit was elite and its operations were strictly classified and rarely made public. Every soldier he’d served with, or trained with during his years at Fort Liberty, North Carolina, was exceptional. Brave men, intelligent, physically outstanding warriors prepared to fight and die for their country.

They had recruited Kyle from the US Army Rangers, and the first four years of his life as a Delta operator were the best years of his life. They trained Kyle extensively in weapons, explosives, hand-to-hand combat, and driving and piloting many military-grade vehicles. He was an expert in counter-terrorism, hostage rescue protocols and insertion into urban, jungle, ice, forest and many forms of combat theatres. He vividly remembered special reconnaissance missions in the desert and in the jungles of central Africa.

Kyle had left school as soon as possible. Sports were his thing; football, baseball, athletics. He’d excelled at them all, picking up awards for football sacks in his sophomore year, and five rushing touchdowns. The academic side came harder, needed more focus. Kyle’s father walked out on his waitress mother when only child Kyle was a baby. His mother had struggled to raise him, using alcohol and abusive boyfriends as a crutch to ease her pain. After a childhood of second-hand clothes, empty food cupboards and sneakers with holes in the bottom, Kyle had run to the army like a needy child into their father’s arms.

He loved everything about the army, apart from the command structure. Orders came from the Joint Special Operations Command, often from officers without genuine field experience. When an entitled West Point blue-blood colonel took over, it was the final straw for Kyle. Tales of friends working private security and making fortunes in the UAE lured him to the Middle East, and Kyle had made a fortune. Once he struck out on his own and became an assassin, his wealth expanded beyond his wildest dreams. He was a wealthy man, and he often wondered what the boy’s version of himself would think if he could see Kyle’s home in the Alps. He had enough wealth now to retire, to enjoy the fruits of his labour. But the pull of combat was everything. What would he do, read and walk his dog all day?

Kyle took the tube to Canary Wharf, nestled amongst commuters blissfully unaware of the small arsenal in the bag at his feet. Jafari and Hydra were coming, he was sure of it. After this job, he would take a break, enjoy the vast sum he was about to receive in payment. But he had waited too long to strike, hoping for the perfect shot, the ideal chance to kill Jordan and Kane to avoid UK police attention, to retrieve the virus and fly out for a couple of months of rest and recuperation.
