Dr. Lucas Caldwell stepped through the door of a private club. Inside, the atmosphere was quieter than he’d expected. Music played but not the blaring rattle-your-brains-out variety that kept him out of dance clubs. Lucas did, but was he really going to resort to paying for it? It wasn’t like he was utterly hopeless. He could find a man on his own, but anonymous encounters always left him feeling dissatisfied and he’d given up on trying to find an actual partner, someone who shared his interests, someone who knew how to enjoy conversation, fine food, reading ancient Latin texts by the fire—okay, the last was probably a pipe dream, but even the first had failed. So he might as well have some really hot sex from a professional, no prowling through bars, no need to dance, figuratively or literally. This was a business transaction, like purchasing a fine wine. He’d enjoy his evening and then go home and move on like he would if he’d hired a massage therapist or eaten at a five-star restaurant. This was just another type of pleasure that he was willing to pay for.

A friend had recommended the place, not that Lucas had asked. He doubted he would’ve had the nerve to do that. But a friend of a friend had availed himself of the club’s services and been far more pleased than he’d expected by the… companion he’d hired. This club also had the advantage of being on the opposite side of town from the university, so Lucas wasn’t as likely to run into someone he knew.

Once he’d talked himself into googling the place, he’d discovered that he could schedule an appointment online, where he’d filled out a form to request the services he desired and the particular traits he preferred in his… provider. Now it remained to be seen whether he could actually go through with this arrangement.

He approached the host stand where a man who was older than the dancers but no less beautiful was waiting to assist him. The man was dressed professionally in a white button-down and dark pants rather than being shirtless or in a g-string or something more along the lines Lucas had expected.

“Do you have a reservation, sir?” he asked.

“Yes, I do.”

“Wonderful.” He didn’t say the word suggestively or smirk or anything. Lucas might have been at a high-class restaurant or hotel. “Your name?”

“Dunwell.” He’d used his mother’s maiden name for the booking, though he’d had to submit to a background check so someone here knew who he really was. If the university found out… Well, there’d been far worse scandals. What he did on his own time shouldn’t matter.
