Chapter 28

Philip walked in and my knees turned to rubber. His hair was tied back and I shivered inside remembering how wonderful it had looked hanging loose around his face that night in the cabin.

“John,” he said calmly, and they shook hands. He nodded to Maddy and then looked at me. “Hi Mel, John told me about your fall,” he said, staring at my swollen eye which I knew all too well was turning a ghastly shade of green. “Are you okay?”

The fact that he sounded genuinely concerned comforted me.

“She’s fine,” said John.

Philip took off his jacket and put it on the nearest chair. “Now that I know you’re okay,” he said to me, “tell me, what the hell’s going on?”

“Where’s the doc?” John asked.

“Last time I saw him he was at the clinic,” said Philip. “Why?”

“What about Jimmy and Tony?” I asked. “And Robert? Where are they?”

He shrugged his shoulders. “I have no idea. Should I? All I know is that my father told me you’d gone into the computer and into his office, presumably looking for something. So what were you looking for?”

“My own damn file, Philip, that was all. I felt like your father was keeping something from me during my last exam; I wanted to see for myself what he’d written down.”

“Cameras picked her up going in and out of his office with a box,” said John, and he walked over and tapped one of the two sitting on the floor.

Philip shook his head. “All this because you couldn’t find your file?”

“Yes – or Maddy’s or Eric’s. And also because our names are not even on the list of clinic births. And I want to know why!”

Before Philip could answer, John addressed him. “Have you ever been in Building 10?”

“No, why?”

“Melanie has.”

“John!” I hadn’t expected him to blurt it out like that. His dark eyes were intense, his powerfully built body rigid, as he paced.

Philip looked at me, confused. “Inside? Why?”

“I, I saw someone moving around out there,” I stammered. “and I went to see who it was. It turned out to be Robert.”

“He’s allowed,” said Philip. “Robert needs access to the repair areas for the clinic vehicles and my dad stores everything from birdfeed to surveillance tapes out there. Hell, that’s where he keeps medical supplies and equipment, stuff like that. No one but the two of them needs to be out there.”

If Philip was telling the truth, he didn’t have any idea what was really in that building. “That’s not what’s out there.” I said, and launched into a description of the gruesome contents of Building 10 and how Helen and the three men had taken something from there, in the process explaining where else I’d been and how I’d sustained my injury. I felt like I had told the story a thousand times, each time in a different order. Philip, like the others, looked at me like I was crazy.

“That’s not possible,” he professed when I was finished, “I would know if my father was doing something like that.
