Chapter 4

Mia kept busy fielding calls and visits from fashionable, gorgeous blondes (they were always blondes!) who wanted to surprise the Prince. Mia took to keeping comfortable shoes beneath her desk to change to on the occasions it was necessary.

Kelly of the Aerosmith concert was in the picture for two weeks, long enough to get her photo on gossip sites linked with the Sultry Prince, as the tabloids had called him. Manhattan Beauty Tames Sultry Prince! Proclaimed one outlet, while another accused, Shame on the Prince! Malouf Two-Times Lawyer Lady! Complete with an out of focus picture of a random dark haired man embracing a redhead in a black dress. Kelly called daily about the headlines, half giddy, half terrified.

“Who is this redhead?” She demanded.

“It’s a fake picture, Kelly,” Mia said patiently, “He was in the office on a conference call till ten. The date stamp on the photo says it was taken last night at nine. Stop worrying. Happy couples don’t get web hits!”

“Okay. I know I’m being stupid but I’ve never dated a celebrity before.”

“Didn’t you go out with Ryan Gosling?”

“Like twice. He wasn’t royalty or anything. He was just a cute guy and a client of the firm,” Kelly protested. She was an entertainment lawyer and had plenty of experience with the glitterati.

“Do yourself a favor and stay off the gossip pages,” Mia told her, “I’m sure he’ll email you later. He’s got a jam-packed day until really late,” She hedged.

By six in the evening, Mia had sent the standard brush off emails to two more women, returned a very fine leather wallet to the sender and snacked on the dried fruit medley another woman had sent. She ordered his body wash and shampoo for pick up tomorrow in store, and made a note about thread count for the sheets he wanted replaced.

“I have a meeting downtown in an hour. Do you have plans for tonight?” Tamir asked.

Mia was startled to find him standing nearby and felt her cheeks flush.

“I’m free as a bird. Is this a meeting with Overdaters Anonymous and you need a sponsor?” She teased.

“No, it’s a meeting with a staffing contractor—it’s run by a husband and wife team. I’m trying to negotiate a better deal and we’re meeting at a hotel bar. I’d like to keep it light and social,” He explained.

“So I’m your fake date?”

“I don’t want to involve Kelly in business dealings. Her motivations might cause conflict.”

“Motivations?”

“She wants to be a princess. I’d like to keep the focus on the staffing deal and some small talk, not a showcase of her accomplishments,”

“Is Kelly a show-off?”

“Kelly is a remarkable young woman who happens to have a tendency to behave as if she were competing in a beauty pageant when with a group of people socially.”

“So you’re less afraid that I’ll embarrass you?” Mia snorted.

“No. I expect you to embarrass me differently,” He corrected, “She would be excessive in her awe of me and my title. You, however, have the opposite problem and are too unimpressed with me.
