CHAPTER 3

The room was stunning, with chocolate brown walls, a thick figured carpet in red and gold, and a vast bed with bronze hangings. It looked the way she imagined the room of a Spanish queen might look, all opulence and rich detail and over-the-top comfort. The bathroom was palatial with a shower the size of her living room back in New York.

Looking around surreptitiously and finding herself alone in this kingdom of a bathroom, she shucked her abaya and took a shower, feeling totally decadent. Swathed in a fluffy hotel robe, she reclined on the bed, reading her attorney friend’s assessment of the contract and signing off on it.

Her phone lit with a message. Do you find the suite satisfactory? From the king.

Yes. It’s lovely. Thank you. she replied, schooling herself not to respond with a cheeky allusion to concubines, massages, the giant shower or any other innuendo that sprang too readily to mind.

A knock at her door announced room service. “I haven’t ordered anything,” she said.

“It is a welcome treat from His Highness,” the server said, and she opened the door. The man wheeled in a trolley bearing a dish covered with a stainless steel dome, then withdrew. She found an exquisite slice of cake, fluffy white sponge with slivered strawberries and cream between each of the six layers, all topped with a mound of buttercream and fan-shaped strawberry garnish. She lifted the silver dessert fork and tasted one meltingly decadent bite before calling King Samin.

“Thank you for the dessert, but I’m still quite full from our luncheon,” she said.

“I regret it is not the pink cake you requested, but our pastry chef is quite good and assured me this would be a decent substitute,” he teased.

“It’s absolute heaven. So sweet and creamy,” she remarked. “I’ve reviewed the contract and emailed you the signature.”

“That’s good. You can begin work tonight instead of in the morning,” he said.

“What would you like me to work on?”

“I want you to look over the plans on the damper issue we discussed yesterday, and formalize your recommendation. I’ll text you the email address for my engineering team so you can send them that decision at my behest.”

“All right. Anything else?”

“I’m having a computer sent up to you that’s loaded with the design in its entirety and the 2D drafting software with editing capabilities. I want to see what you come up with. Make me a list.”

“If I’m to review the entire structural design and make notes, I’ll need some time.”

“Tomorrow night? Drinks downstairs?”

“I’ll make that work.” She sighed, wondering what she’d signed on for if she had to review and annotate the complete design in twenty-four hours.

Within minutes the laptop was delivered and she emailed her damper recommendations and set to work on the design. It was clean and ultramodern, with a rotating turret at the apex that was sure to become a skyline landmark. Unlike the glassed-in restaurants in Vegas, this had a minaret-like shape, bulbous and distinctive.
