Chapter 4

“Mia, I’m pregnant,” she said into the phone in a deathly hush.

“Oh my god, that’s so great. I’m so happy for you!”

“No. Why do people say that? It’s not part of the plan, babe. I want to go back to New York and just make this never have happened.”

“Wait, are you thinking about getting rid of the—pregnancy?” A catch in Mia’s voice reminded Carly of the baby Mia had so tragically lost.

“No, I just want to go back in time and not rely so trustingly on the pill. I just wish I wasn’t pregnant. I’m not going to get rid of the baby. I mean, I love Samin. This is damn inconvenient and complicates the shit out of my life, but I wouldn’t—want to NOT have his baby, do you know what I mean?”

“Not really. I had to struggle to get pregnant, Carly. There’s no room in my mind to understand someone not wanting a baby.”

“It’s not the baby itself I object to. It’s being knocked up, unmarried, in Dubai and about to find myself tied forever to a man who I’m incompatible with and who will now have control over a pretty big part of my life. Like, what if he wants her to go to boarding school like he did? He probably won’t let me leave the country with her, and it’ll be like that movie where Sally Field can’t take her daughter home with her—”

“Calm down, hormone girl. He’s the man you love, not a movie villain. And you are not Sally Field and you are no longer allowed to watch Lifetime. Stop making yourself crazy,” Mia said.

“It’s not hormones. I’ve always been like this. I have a taser. I have paranoia issues.”

“You’re a walking worst case scenario loudspeaker, I know this. I still love you. And I now love your baby. You’ll have to frame a pair of baby socks I get you. Carl loves his.”

“He does not. He wonders why you have emergency socks behind glass. It’s strange, but it means a lot to me.”

“So, I’ll get you socks as soon as you find out the gender. When’s your first ultrasound?”

“Oh my god, I have to have an ultrasound. I have to go to the doctor and have blood drawn and take giant vitamin pills.” Carly was panicked.

“Relax, you can do this. I bet Samin will be your biggest cheerleader.”

“The man won’t wear a kilt, so I doubt I could get him into a team sweater and skirt with pompoms.”

“It was a metaphor, but now I have an image of King Samin of Raihaan with his long hair in a perky pony with a white bow in it. I will never be able to look him in the eyes again, thanks to you.”

“He’s really strong. I bet he’d be on the bottom of the pyramid in cheer.”

“STOP,” Mia laughed. “But since you can joke about this, I feel better. If you’d stopped being sarcastic I’d have had to call the paramedics, and I don’t even know how to call them in Dubai.
