Chapter 4

Back in Manhattan, Mia ate leafy greens and joined a yoga class and counted days until she could take a pregnancy test. On the morning when her cycle should have begun, she set out early for the drug store but Tamir stopped her at the door of their apartment.

“I’ll go with you, but first come with me to the park,” he said.

Together, they sat on a bench looking at the beautiful H-shaped play structure he had built in honor of their lost baby. As they sat in the chilly stillness of morning, a woman came to the playground pushing a stroller and holding a small boy by the hand. As Tamir and Mia watched, the sturdy little chap climbed the stairs to the curly slide, waved to his mother and to them and, as they waved back, he slid down the slide shouting “WHEEE!” all the way. Mia clasped Tamir’s hand and shut her eyes in sheer thankfulness for the life they shared, for all they hoped for and even for all they had lost.

Tamir got her a huge bottle of Evian at the drugstore. “For luck,” he said sheepishly and she hugged him right there in the checkout lane.

“We don’t need luck. We have each other,” she told him steadily.

At home, she went into the bathroom and took the test, then came out to sit on the bed beside Tamir while they waited. He held her in the circle of his arms and kept silent, counting the minutes wordlessly.

“I’m glad you’re here with me,” she said thickly as she made to look at the telltale stick.

“POSITIVE!” she squealed, and came into the bedroom brandishing the stick.

“Two lines,” he confirmed as she waved the stick in his face.

“Don’t worry. There’s a plastic cap on it to protect you from the pee part,” she said, laughing.

Tamir picked her up and spun her around, utterly joyous.

“Let’s not tell anyone, not just yet,” Mia said.

“Keep it our secret? I like that. Holds it precious somehow that way.”

“I won’t text Adib or CNN or anyone else this time, I promise,” Mia said a little shakily.

“Don’t be afraid to believe that everything will be well. Have faith, Mia mine.”

“I have faith in you, in us.”

“Then have faith in—Carlyle. That’s the new baby,” Tamir said with a triumphant grin.

“Carlyle,” she said with a small, secret smile. “Welcome to the world, little Carlyle. We’ll take good care of you. You are so loved already.”

“Let’s read him a book. Seuss or Rumi? Your choice.”

“How about a takeout menu? Carlyle is hungry,” she teased.

“What does Carlyle want? Locally sourced legumes and organic kale chips?”

“Carlyle feels like celebrating. He wants pizza, with lots of veg of course.”

From then on, Mia looked in the mirror every morning, eyeballing her belly to see if it had grown. Tamir accompanied her to her first prenatal appointment and was there for the internal sonogram where Carlyle looked suspiciously like popcorn. They heard the heartbeat, loud as thunder and fast as a racehorse.
