CHAPTER 4

The following morning, they collected the twins and Mrs. Simpkins and flew to Raihaan. Their parents and the wedding party followed on another jet. Carly sagged against the cushions and munched almonds listlessly. Samin asked if she was tired from the celebration and reminded her that she had two days until the wedding in Raihaan—two days full of official events. She wished it was over, that they were on a honeymoon, sequestered from the noise and observation, the perpetual smiles and thanks. The exhaustion of having two weddings and all the attendant celebrations was enough excuse for her to remain silent so she didn’t bother to tell Samin how she worried about her new role, how she was beginning to resent the fact that so many choices were made for them because he was king.

There had been no question of a long honeymoon—they had only a week before Samin had a major speaking engagement in Vienna, so their trip must be necessarily brief. There was no possibility of a leisurely private interlude with the guards and nanny involved. Likewise, there was no house hunting, no apartment-seeking. They lived in the Andalusian for both convenience and security, as their penthouse was accessible only by private elevator and now heavily guarded.

There had been a time when Carly had wanted a place overlooking Central Park West. Now she just hoped to have a place of their own, one without uniformly tasteful décor and room service at the touch of a button. A hotel wasn’t a real home, not for her and not for her babies. Trying to wade through her firestorm of doubts, she sat quietly on the plane, handing Alexander a silver rattle absentmindedly and trying to keep calm.

In Raihaan, they were welcomed by an enormous crowd of well-wishers who pressed flowers upon them and called their names, and the names of their son and daughter. Shielding Aubrey’s face from the cameras with her open hand, Carly hurried through the airport and into the waiting car, shaken as if pursued. She saw the babies settled in their safety seats and then sagged back against Samin’s shoulder.

“Too much wedding?” he asked and she nodded, unwilling to say more. “You’re curiously quiet today.”

“I’m overwhelmed,” she said truthfully.

“That was a lavish welcome. It’s down to you and the babies. Never when I returned home have I been met by more than a handful of people. You have loyal subjects now, who love you and will wait outside for hours to get a glimpse,” Samin said proudly.

At the palace, instead of an opportunity to retire to their suite and rest, they were met with a surprise gathering of Samin’s top aides and their spouses—a champagne reception at ten in the morning. Mrs. Simpkins bundled the twins off to change and play in the garden while Carly assumed her automatic gracious smile and started shaking hands politely.
