The day after the dinner from hell, Eris called me to apologize again. It was early. I’d just dropped Chase off and was back home at my place searching for jobs on my laptop. I’d decided to take a break from the Windermere family for a while, but here he came being all contrite.

“It wasn’t your fault,” I told him. “You don’t have to apologize. She’s a grown woman.”

“She’s a cockblocker.”

I burst out laughing. “She doesn’t even know about us.”

“She probably sensed it. Sniffed us out like a bloodhound.”

“You’re so silly.”

“I got something I wanna ask you.”

“What?”

“The mayor’s ball is this weekend. I want you to come with me.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“How do you know the mayor?”

“All the registered candidates got an invite.”

“Wow. I…wow.”

“I could go by myself, but I’d rather have the prettiest girl I know on my arm.”

“It’s formal, right? I don’t have a dress…well, I still have my old prom dress, but absolutely not.”

“I’ll get you a dress.”

“You will?”

“Of course. And shoes and whatnot. Look, if you decide to go, I’ll have my sister hook you up. She knows way more about all that shit than I do.”

The mayor’s ball. That meant legitimate people. No Gab types there, hopefully.

“Can you get somebody to watch Little Man?”

“I could check with my sister.”

“Okay, so you’ll go?”

“I’ll go. Thank you for inviting me, Eris.”

“You don’t have to thank me. I like to think we’re together now.”

“Oh, you like to think that, huh?”

He chuckled. “I’ma text you Jaz’s number. Hit her up.”

I was less sure about that part.

I knew Jaz from high school. She was in my class, at least for a semester, but then she was gone. There was a rumor that she got sent to alternative school, but I think she just got suspended and stopped coming. The year after that, she was back, but she was still in the same grade.

Obviously, I’d been around her since then, but it was never more than hi and bye. She didn’t pay attention to me, and I found her kind of intimidating. And dumb.

But I wanted to do this, so if I had spend a few hours with her, so be it.
