Chapter 9
It was nine thirty when Bridget made her grand entrance. She strode into the office and with a flourish, placed the laptop on Jackâs desk. âThere you are sir, as ordered. Open for the whole world to see. It took what we call âbrute force crackingâ but our little army of anoraks and an array of machines managed it.â
Jack looked up from his frustrating examination of the papers from McManusâ car. He had a suspicion that needed to be checked, but the beginning of the dayâs work involved a report to Coulson. He was sure he would give it only a cursory glance once he realised that it was all theory and maybe coincidence. Coulson needed hard facts. Even the sudden revelation that Nicholsonâs brother- in- law fitted in to a possible link would not impress him. Then he needed to give a word for word account to Stella of his talk with Forrest. He anticipated the look on her face and he was right. Eyes widening; jaw dropping and a gasp as the implications ferreted into her brain. Clare had had a similar reaction. It didnât take any more stimulation for her journalists mind to conjure up the growing possibility of some major conspiracy. The connections that had been nebulous were now strengthening by the day, and she couldnât contain her excitement. But as yet there was nothing conclusive, only conjecture and supposition. She found herself warming to her husband and his dogged approach to the case. She had done some poking into N.N.S herself but all she could glean was some background on Nicholson and the company set- up.
âNicholsonâs sister owns half the company,â she told him.
He nodded. âI know.â
âHeâs got a Masters degree in chemistry and did a post grad. in physics. Heriot Watt Uni. up in Edinburgh. He worked for a while at Aldermaston, in Berkshire. Thatâs where they manufacture Trident nuclear warheads. He moved from there to Burghfield. Thatâs another nuclear weapons establishment. They assemble the warheads there. He also did a year up in the wilds of Scotland at Dounreay. Theyâve got what they call a fast breeder reactor up there on the North coast. All experimental Iâm told. Itâs long been shut down. It was supposed to produce more radioactive fuel than it consumed. But for some reason the whole idea fizzled out. The powers that be stuck it up there in case of a major nuclear incident. If it went haywire the number of human casualties would be ⦠hopefully, few. Damage limitation they call it. Not many people up there, but a lot of sheep. He came back to Newcastle and set up his business with a legacy from his old man. It was split between him and his sister so she partnered him. It was doing OK until a couple of years ago. He landed a big contract doing a complete refurbishment job on the reactors at a nuclear power station in Scotland. He lost a packet on it. Thatâs when the rot set in.
