Pinks, blues, greens, yellows… The colors swirled in a vortex in front of Meg’s vision, sucking her into a shocked silence.

It wasn’t the news of the engagement that’d stunned her. It was the second part—the part about Chad’s bride not being able to have her own babies.

Now, Kane’s Crossing gossip had never been high on her list of accurate sources. It ranked right up there with tabloid magazines and the county newspaper. But Meg knew in her heart that she needed to be prepared for the worst when Chad returned home; she needed to be able to fight for her child, no matter the situation.

What would she do if Chad’s wife wanted her baby?

One thing was for sure—she’d never let that happen. Hadn’t she married Nick for that reason? As a preventive plan, to secure the belief that he’d fathered the baby?

Maybe she should run away, as Nick had suggested when he’d first gotten into town. But running away meant leaving a haunted past behind, always being afraid, always having to peek around corners to make sure Chad wasn’t waiting there for her and her child. She’d been running for too long and, frankly, she was sick to death of it.

She was ready to face Chad. Maybe.

Damn this lack of confidence. Damn this town. Damn her inability to make up her mind.

Nick’s boot steps thumped behind her and she turned to peer up at him. As always, his torn-jeans attitude jerked her heart to attention.

“I’m not in a shopping mood today,” she said.

He guided her out of the store, his hand on her back, reassuring and strong. This was the man who’d saved her baby. She’d be eternally grateful.

Neither of them mentioned the gossip, and Meg took that as a good sign.

She never paused to reflect on the cold, hungry set of his jaw or the dead-steel glint of his eyes.
