Chapter Nine
âNow, what am I going to do?â Emily stood over Kat, a vision of Roseâs shocked expression still fresh in her mind. He lay beneath the sheets on the rumpled bed watching her frantic pacing with a smile of questionable nature curving his lips. âYou could at least have said something.â
âAnd exactly what was it I should have said? When you so cleverly hid me beneath the sheet, I was under the impression youâd rather I kept my mouth shut.â
Emily paused long enough to throw him an impatient glare. âThat was an accident.â On her return trip past the bed, she stopped again and glared at him. âHells bells, Kat. We were both naked. What would you have had me do, invite her to join us?â
A chuckle rumbled through his wide chest. âAnd me playing ostrich with a sheet over my head was your answer?â
She made a face at him. â I told you that was an accident. And you might stop being sarcastic and help.â
âFor starters, you might have tried telling her that weâre married and that you havenât sold yourself into prostitution. Iâll bet sheâs downstairs imagining all kinds of scenarios.â
Men! They had no sense of timing. Even if he was right, and he probably was, and Rose was downstairs imagining the worst, she couldnât just blurt something like that out. Not being told about the wedding before it happened would hurt Rose. Any explanation had to be approached with finesse. And right now, she didnât have a clue as to how to face the woman waiting in the kitchen for that explanation.
âHey, Squirt.â She looked at him. He quirked his finger. âCome here.â Patting the side of the bed, he shifted to make room for her.
The sheet covering the lower half of his torso slipped a couple of inches, threatening to reveal what lay below its snowy white folds. Emily jerked the tie of her robe tighter and inhaled sharply. âIâll stay right where I am, thank you very much.â
The last thing she needed right now was another romp in the hay with Kat, even though, way back in her mind, the thought presented some interesting possibilities.
She halted her thoughts short of examining those possibilities. Bad enough that last night still played in her head like an NFL instant replay and that her skin still tingled every time she thought of making love with Kat. Thoughts like that would only pave the way for more problems and right now she had enough to think about. She wouldnât be in this mess if sheâd stop letting her emotions overrule her common sense.
Now that the flames from the night before had died down, she had some serious questions running around in her head about her feelings for Kat and what exactly sheâd be left with, once the child had been conceived.
Just the fact that the baby had never entered her mind the night before scared the bejesus out of her. What had happened in this bed had not
