Martin watched through the heavy, leaded windows of his private office as, outside the house, Robert was giving some instructions to two of his team whom Martin hadn’t seen before. The two men he was briefing were standing side by side, loosely in a standing at ease position, while Robert spoke to them. Every few seconds, Robert brought one of his hands down in a chopping motion which was accompanied by the other two nodding.

Behind them was a large, black Range Rover Evoque, one of four SUVs that Martin owned. He liked the boxy vehicles, and the power that sat under their hoods. Except he didn’t technically own them. His company did, but to find out it was his company would take several forensic experts months if not years to discover. He’d paid a lot of money to a lot of banks in various countries to make sure there were enough layers of deniability between him and the company itself.

The two men turned, Robert’s briefing seemingly complete, and one of them picked up a small gym bag that was lying on the gravel drive in front of them. As he did so, he turned and looked at Martin. The man held his eyes for a few seconds before nodding almost imperceptibly at him. Like his colleague, the man’s movements were concise and considered. They both wore black from head to toe, matching the SUV and its windows that were so tinted Martin couldn’t even see their silhouettes when the door had closed. After lurking on the gravel for a moment, the car crept away down the drive and toward the road. A few moments later, there was a soft knock on his office door.

“Come in,” Martin said. The door opened and Robert walked in. “All good?”

“Yes, Martin, they’re all set. They’re taking some extra equipment with them. Just in case.” Without waiting for an invitation, Robert sat down in one of the leather-bound chairs.

“Ah, I wondered what was in the bag,” Martin replied, taking a seat opposite Robert. “What’s their story, those two?”

“Both ex-Regiment.” Martin didn’t need to ask which regiment Robert was referring to. “I was in Afghanistan with them both back in the day. Just as the fun was starting. Both good lads.” Robert crossed his legs. “They don’t mess about, either of them.”

“No, they don’t look as if they do.”

Martin was about to call Natalka to bring them some coffee when he remembered she’d gone to Milton Keynes the previous day. He swore under his breath.

“Any news on a replacement for Natalka, Robert?” Robert glanced at his watch before replying.

“Should be here in a couple of hours.”

“Who is she?”

“A girl called Lika. She’s being brought from the Nottingham parlor.”

“Has she been through here?”

“No, she went direct. She’s seventeen but is Georgian, so she can look after the girls. She’s on the website under the name Foxy.”

“Okay, well, seeing as she’s not here yet, how about you rustle up some coffee for us?”

If Robert was offended at being given such a menial task, he didn’t show it.
