Schacht had also arrived at the hospital but he had entered through the front entrance.

Buying flowers at the hospital gift shop, he intended to openly visit Elizabeth Mircea to check on her welfare. If the police had a problem with that, well then they could arrest him for being a nice caring guy. If that was a crime, then he was guilty as charged.

He walked up to the main reception desk where a stressed and exhausted looking nurse was tapping into a computer.

“Yes?” she said, barely looking up from what she was doing.

“There was a woman brought in this morning. She was shot in the village along with that poor unfortunate police officer. I’m here to give her these flowers and to see how she is.”

The nurse stopped her typing and looked more closely at Schacht.

“Are you related to Mrs Dillard?”

“No” admitted Schacht, “but I was the one who decided to jump into the fight and almost got killed for my trouble. I merely wanted to check on her, that’s all.”

The nurse’s face softened when she realised that Schacht was the hero that the cable news was referring to non-stop.

“Mrs Dillard is under police protection, so I am not sure it would be possible to see her. She has just had her operation and is not even conscious.”

“Could I just leave these flowers by her bedside?” smiled Schacht, “the police can watch me if it makes them feel better.”

The nurse hesitated again for a moment, then picked up the phone. Eventually somebody on the other end picked up.

“Aye, Jackie on the main desk here. There’s a gentleman here with flowers for Mrs Dillard. He says he was the one who saved her this morning. Can he deliver the flowers to the room?……aye, right OK….thanks.”

She replaced the receiver. “Second floor. An officer will be there to meet you. But you can only have five minutes and he says you will be closely watched.”

Schacht nodded. “Five minutes is all I need.”
