CHAPTER ELEVEN
Annalise had no sense of what time it was as she was rudely awakened by a screeching sound, one that her body must have known before her mind did. It was not a good sign. Annalise blinked her eyes open to find herself in a tangle on the couch, covered in a blanket, her husband also wrapped up with her. They had both awakened to the same sound and looked at each other with a registering of fear in their eyes.
That shriek was one she had heard before, one belonging to her child, when she was in danger. It had generally been used in the past to signify a bump on the head or a scrape on the knee. Now, with everything that has been happening, Annalise just knew it wasn't good news. There was no time to ask questions. The children could be in danger even with the barrier still in place, not only on the outside of the clanâs territory, but also around their house. The wolves had not made a sound, had not come to track them down to tell them there was a breach. There had been nothing but Isaiahâs arms, all night. So, what could have happened? It didn't matter, she had to get to her children.
Annalise slid on Isaiahâs tee shirt, not caring about her appearance, rushing into Astrid's room where she had left them all in bed together the night before. She gasped, and her heart skipped a beat, as she saw it was entirely empty. No one was there, and there was no way to know how long they had been gone.
She heard the scream again and realized it was coming from right outside. It sounded like one of them had ended up out there, and the sound was getting nearer until the door swung open.
Annalise opened her arms to a screaming and crying Lillybeth as Isaiah ran out the door, clearly looking for the others. She knew, before he even said anything to confirm her suspicion, they were gone. Malachi and Astrid were gone.
Lillybeth was hysterical, as Annalise wrapped her in her arms and picked her up. It was the same as she had done when she was only a baby.
She carried her over to the couch. They wrapped up in the blanket together and sobbed, rocking back and forth. Annalise would wait until she was ready to say what happened, if she even knew.
Annalise recalled how the demoness had fooled Liza, making her forget all but the words that were spoken. Was that something she could do to her powerful children as well? Surely, if she could take them from a protected house, then yes, yes, she could.
Annalise had no tears left at the moment, and she reached down to tuck Lillybethâs long, blonde hair behind her ears, getting it out of the sticky tears that had run down her cheeks. She hoped the gesture would be comforting. Whatever Lillybeth had gone through was not something a child so young should have to face.
