Chapter 17

Lukas rubbed his temples as he tried to get his head around this new information. Like everyone else, he was tired and groggy, so perhaps his brain wasn’t as sharp as usual. My mom continues to surprise me, he thought. “Mom, do you have any other stories I need to know?”

“Well, you didn’t need to know either of those stories. I chose to tell you to help put things in perspective. Did they help?”

Lukas nodded. “You’ve had a way more adventurous life than I would have imagined.”

Molly shook her head. “My life was adventurous, as you say, and I’m grateful for everything I’ve done that has led up to today.”

“So,” Lukas started, “I’m afraid to ask this, but what exactly did you ladies do on these trips?’

“At first, not much,” Linda responded. “We were in Baghdad, I think it was, and supposed to act like college girl tourists. You know, all laughy and ditzy—something non-threatening. There were always a few CIA guys around, so we knew we were relatively safe most of the time. And being young, we trusted everything they told us to do or say.”

“That was our first real trip out there in the real world, wasn’t it?” Donna asked.

“Yes, we were green and probably looked pretty nervous. Our job was to look for an address the CIA gave us, have local people lead us confused young ladies to the general vicinity, and nail the bad guy. Well, actually, the CIA sharpshooters nailed him.”

“Mission accomplished,” Molly said. “But we were smart and resourceful, so we started to get creative, and not only find the bad guy, but to take him out, without the CIA’s help.”

“But we had their blessing,” Donna interjected.

Lukas buried his face in his hands. “Please tell me this isn’t happening,” he whispered to Taylor.

“I’m afraid it is,” Taylor responded.

“We got good at finding these bad guys because nobody would think that young women would be any kind of threat. Most of the time, the terrorists were hiding in plain sight, like in someone’s house in the city,” Molly continued. “Kind of like bin Laden. For years, the military combed the mountains, caves, and bunkers in Afghanistan. Then they found the asshole living in an upper-class neighborhood in Abbottabad, Pakistan, right under everybody’s nose. The Navy Seals took him out when he was watching TV.”

“We did that for about, what, three years? Linda asked.

“Three, four max,” Donna answered.

“That’s when we started calling ourselves the Herb Society,” Molly recalled. “Acronym using the first letters of our last names.”

“We were not allowed to use Project Rosemary in conversation, so we substituted Herb Society for it,” Betty concluded.

“Then I got pregnant with Lukas, so we stopped traveling, and Project Rosemary was mothballed. We thought the tie-in with Rosemary and Herb was cute, so it stuck.”

Taylor asked what he knew Lukas wanted to know. “So did you all ever carry out…um…the deed?”

“Oh sure,” Betty chimed in. “We probably took out ten to fifteen guys during our time. Maybe more than that.
