There was a knock at the back door. Porter and the doctor were both already near it, sitting in chairs as they waited for it. It was a little over an hour since Porter first arrived at the facility. As soon as they heard the knock, they both jumped out of their seats.

The doctor put his finger up as if he wanted silence, not that there was any danger of Porter making a noise. She was a pro at this type of thing by now. The doctor tiptoed over to the door and looked out a small peephole. He recognized the man that was out there. This wasn’t the first time for him, either. The doctor looked at Porter and nodded, letting her know it was all right. He then opened the door, allowing the visitor to come in.

A younger man rushed inside, not wanting to stand outside for any longer than was necessary. He was probably in his mid to late twenties, with short black hair and glasses. He was of medium height and had an unthreatening look to him.

“Everything ready?” he asked in his British accent. “We really should be moving soon.”

“Ready when you are,” the doctor answered.

“Well, I’m ready now.”

The doctor put his arm out toward Porter to introduce her. “This is Cari.”

The man nodded at her. “Good to meet ya. You got everything?”

Porter looked down at herself. “I’m all I got.”

“Traveling light. Good. I like it. Much easier that way.”

The doctor pointed at the sling that Porter’s arm was now in. “Keep it like that. Two weeks.”

Porter faked a smile. “I’ll remember.”

“In case something happens, you remember where I am.”

Porter nodded. “Thanks.”

“Be careful.”

Porter looked over at the new guy in the room. “I’m ready if you are.”

“If you’re ready, I’m ready.”

“What’s your name, anyway?”

The man shrugged, as if his name wasn’t important. “Just call me Masty.”

“Masty?”

“More of a nickname, really. But it serves the purpose. It’s what most people know me as.”

“Uh, OK. Where are we going?” Porter asked.

Masty grinned. “I’ll let you know when we get there. Better that way.”

“You’re in charge, I guess.”

Masty put his index finger above his eye and gave the doctor a one-fingered salute. “Have a good one, Doc. Till the next time.”

“Yes, be careful,” he replied.

Porter followed Masty out the door and walked to his car. He opened the back door for her.

“Get down on the back seat and lie down,” Masty said. “There’s a blanket on the floor there to cover you up.”

Porter sighed. Certainly wasn’t the first time she had to assume that position. A good chance it wouldn’t be the last, either. “Yeah, yeah, I know the drill. How long will it take to get to where we’re going?”

“Not long. Twenty minutes, maybe. Assuming there're no complications.”

“Complications such as what?”

“You know, people following us and such.”

“Are you expecting that?”

“No, but you can never tell these days. I’ll tell you one thing, though. The more we stand out here jabbering away, the more likely it is we’re going to be spotted.
