CHAPTER 21

Stanton drove on the Santa Monica Freeway and watched the ocean in the distance as he climbed a small hill. The freeway was busy and several cars honked at him as he was driving just under the speed limit, but he didn’t feel like going fast right now.

He passed a home to his right in a cul-de-sac that he had visited once as a detective. It was for a case in Special Victims that involved a homosexual rape at a bachelor party. Stanton had interviewed several people that attended the party but had never found a suspect. The victim had been drugged and couldn’t give many details. Years later, Stanton had learned that the victim had killed himself.

He called Emma and told her what had happened at the interview.

“So what’re you going to do?” she said.

“I’m going back to my practice tomorrow.”

“And you’re just going to forget about all this? Just like that?”

“What choice do I have? This is an investigation that could take months. I can’t put my business on hold that long. Parents are relying on me to find their children.”

“Isn’t this kinda the same thing?”

“I thought you didn’t want me working with the police anymore?”

“I don’t, but I want it for the right reasons, Jon. I don’t want you to always be thinking about this case and have it affect us.”

“It won’t.”

“Well, if it does, just know I’m here for you either way.”

“Thanks. I better go, this is my exit.”

“Okay. Will I see you tonight?”

“Yeah, come over hungry. We’re going to have a barbeque on the beach.”

“I’m so excited. I’ve been looking forward to it all day.”

“See you tonight.”

“Bye.”

The freeway thinned as Stanton got over to the right shoulder and took the exit leading to downtown. Twenty minutes later he was in front of a plush office building. He parked out front before walking inside. The receptionist was friendly and remembered his name. He signed in on a clipboard and then sat down as she said, “Dr. Palmer will be with you in a moment.”

After ten minutes a thin blond woman in a suit stepped out of wooden double doors. A man preceded her. He looked anxious as he glanced at Stanton and then quickly away.

“Jon,” the woman said, “glad you made it. Come in.”

Two thick leather chairs took up the center of the room. Stanton followed her inside and sat down across from her. He didn’t say anything as she made herself comfortable and smiled.

“So how’s life?” she said.

“Good.”

“Your work is going well?”

“It is. I’ve been a little sidetracked lately, but other than that, it’s fine. I have more clients than I know what to do with. I’ve been having to refer them out.”

“Sounds like you’re where you want to be professionally.”

“I never pictured myself as a private investigator, but yeah, things are going great professionally.” Stanton glanced around the office and saw no photos, no identifying markers whatsoever. Only three degrees up on the wall and a medical license.

“And your personal life. I think we discussed in the last session that you’re getting serious with a professor from UCLA.
