Patty eyed Karen, who had a pit in her stomach from the moment Ashton pulled up in the parking lot. What was she thinking? Suddenly she realized she couldn’t give Sarah a hug. They didn’t even have a story about how Ashton ended up playing with this random team. Karen kept her phone at the ready knowing she’d be fielding calls from the office through the whole game. She wanted to support Sarah, but wasn’t sure how she could do that.
“Do you usually come to the games?” Karen asked, thinking it wasn’t school ball. Why would a mother come to an adult game?
“No, I was invited. My daughter wanted me to meet someone.”
“Oh…” Karen’s face flushed with heat and she closed her eyes. If she looked around she might see someone or something that would make her run. Her stomach churned and she reached for the bottle of water in her purse.
“Although I don’t know how I can find out about a person who’s limited on what she can talk about.” Patty extended her legs and crossed them at the ankle. “I love my daughter, and I wish her the utmost happiness. No matter what her path is in life, I’ll support it. Sadly, I know some parents aren’t like that. It must be hard.”
“It is.”
“Sarah doesn’t understand that. Right now I can see she’s upset. Hurt even.”
Karen looked to third base and Sarah, who was warming up by tossing the ball between Mandy and Case.
“Daddy keeps dropping Mama,” a little girl who’d been introduced as Claire said to Gabbie.
“I know,” Gabbie said as she covered her eyes. “He’s trying, so we need to cheer him on anyway.”
“Maybe the ball’s too small. You thinks they’d let him use his basketball?”
“No honey, hopefully Daddy will figure it out before your Aunties have to beat him up.”
“They should,” Claire said as she crossed her arms. “Why he stoppin’ you from playin’?”
“Mama’s not feeling too good right now. He’s just trying to help out.”
“You gots a belly ache?” Claire asked her mother.
“Something like that.” Gabbie rubbed her belly protectively with a sly smile.
Three innings into the game Karen felt something she’d not felt in years. Relaxed. Sure, she’d taken a half dozen phone calls about a stance on this or schmoozing with a potential donor, but after she hung up, there was always a place for her to sit without fifty questions.
“It must be hard,” a man’s voice came from behind her as she stood behind the bleachers. She’d just fielded a phone call from Howard and hadn’t noticed the man approach. He wore jeans and a polo, but one that had seen it’s time in the wash cycle enough that he didn’t stand out as over dressed.
“Excuse me?”
“Balancing work and a love life.”
“It can be, but when the person you’re with is worth it you don’t notice as much.”
“You know what I found strange?”
“What’s that?”
“You cheer louder for the third baseman than your fiancé.”
Karen caught a chill as she looked along the third base line where Sarah had her legs spread and slightly bent.
