(As the lights come up, CAROL sits behind the desk holding a script. RICHARD sits opposite her, clearly upset)

RICHARD

Come on, you can’t be serious. The format is wrong? I mean … this is … How anal can you get?

CAROL

Call it what you like, it’s the truth.

(referring to the script)

This screams “amateur.”

(She sets it down in front of him)

RICHARD

(getting up)

I can’t believe this. Did you even read it?

(pacing)

I mean, did my format problems make it impossible for your normally receptive mind to handle the words? It’s the words, you know, the words that count here. Or am I missing something?

CAROL

I think you are. And yes, I did read your words, Richard. Calm down.

RICHARD

Why should I? People like you drive me nuts. What difference does it make how I put it down on the page? It’s what I have to say that I need a response to. Man, I can’t–

(He faces CAROL)

Oh, well, why bother? I should be used to this by now.

(grabbing his script)
