THIRTY-TWO

Jessica

Max must think I was mentally defective, if he really believed I wouldn’t sneak a peek at his purchases. I didn’t like nasty surprises.

And the constant babe-calling. Did he really think I was still flattered by it? Admittedly, before I’d known better, I’d stupidly thought it had meant something, but it hadn’t taken me long to realise my mistake. Two days. That’s all it had taken to see right through Max.

There were two containers, haphazardly crammed into my fridge. I got them out and gingerly opened each one in turn.

One of them made me jump back in shock, and one made me roll my eyes. Bending down, I opened the larger third bucket on the floor – heavy. I had to examine it more closely, putting my nose into the container before I could identify it. That proved to be a mistake. It sloshed around, heavy with liquid – the smell was putrid. Hastily putting the lid on again, I pushed it back against the wall, feeling the contents roll around inside.

The White Eye game. His father’s game, as it turned out, despite Max initially claiming it as his own creation. He’d slipped up saying how it was his father’s favourite game. Slipped up, because he was a fool. That didn’t mean I thought his foolishness wasn’t also sweet, but his idiocy needed nurturing and tending, and I was the person to do just that.

The White Eye game was hardly the height of sophistication, but I was sure the contents of the first two containers would have the desired effect on Eve and Bella. The third, larger smellier white plastic bucket hadn’t been served for breakfast.

Thank God. There were limits, and I didn’t think food, or anything pretending to be edible, masquerading in any other guise than something to be eaten and relished, was in any way comical. Food wasn’t funny. It was something I loved. Angry, I turned my thoughts to the bucket.

Perhaps Max was planning a grand finale later in the day and would use the revolting bucket contents then.

Hurrying, I grabbed a knife and made a quick pit-stop by his coat. Inspected what hung behind it and raised my eyebrows marginally, and then checked what was tucked into the pocket. The latter disturbed me, but not overly.

I caught up with him. Max was back to being all cocksure and preening, assuming he had regained control over me and the entire situation. Think again, Max. This is a test which I am permitting you to carry out, but believe me, I’m expecting you to fail miserably. Failing when you’re with me is something you can’t help doing because I have that effect on you.

Barely able to contain his excitement, he said, ‘Right, open the door and don’t speak. I’ll do all the talking.’

‘No problem.’

He stopped. ‘What are their names again?’

‘Bella and Eve.’

Nodding, he started down the staircase, taking each step carefully as his hands were full with the tray. Holding the knife at my side, not seeing the
