Chapter Eight

T he first thing Alicia and Lucas did upon arriving at their penthouse was to tuck a completely exhausted Gabriel into bed. The mattress was the biggest she’d ever seen, the guest room already custom outfitted with pictures of Sesame Street characters and toys. She was stunned by the efficiency of Lucas’s assistants, as well as the decadence of the penthouse…or, rather, her new home.Yes, she kept telling herself, home, where she belonged.

Afterward, even as Alicia was still reeling from the shock that she, she was going to live in this luxurious place, the head of the household, Ms. Boland, gave her a tour. Lucas excused himself to make a phone call while the proper brunette—a young woman who wore a gray business suit, black-rimmed glasses and bunned hair—had gotten her new mistress acclimated. Then, after the personal assistant left, Alicia found herself very alone.

Alienated. Curious. Discombobulated.

Bundled in a new coat that would’ve been too much for an early winter Mexico night, she wandered onto the terrace, which overlooked Central Park. The cold New York air hit her and she shivered—but not just because of the weather.

I’m really a wife.

Not that Alicia felt like it. During the jet ride, Lucas had almost been a stranger, even if he’d made certain that she was comfortable in every way.

But there’d been something odd about him, as if he were detached. He’d spent most of his time with Gabriel—which she’d loved to watch—or talking in the private back room with David.

It’d seemed as if the only person he hadn’t had time for was her—his bride.

Why? Earlier today, during their wedding, he’d kissed Alicia until her legs had just about turned to wet sand. There’d been no lack of passion then, nor a few days ago, when he’d proposed to her so emotionally.

Shouldn’t the man who’d talked her into such a headlong move want to cuddle on the plane trip home? Or had he been saving his affection for a time when they could be alone?

She trembled again, her blood tumbling, increasing in temperature. The wedding night. A shared bed.

On a primal level, she was ready for him. But she was also nervous, fearful of losing control and becoming what she most feared: Her parents. A bad woman who could never wash herself of the past.

She heard a door slide open and shut behind her. Lucas. Every footstep that closed the distance between them thumped inside her chest like cannon shots.

“Beautiful view,” he said, voice low. It rode the hairs over her sensitized skin, a verbal stroke, slow and easy.

“The park is much bigger than I ever imagined.”

“I’m not talking about the park.”

Boom-da-boom went her heart.

He sauntered over, resting his hands on the brick wall while casting her a look brimming with appreciation. She felt like a goddess again, just as she had in her wedding dress, just as she had when he’d proposed to her and she’d believed with every reckless pound of her blood that she’d fallen for him at first sight, and that he’d fallen for her, too.
