Charles invited Kerry out to dinner on the Friday; she accepted and they drove along the rocky Atlantic coast of the island to Sam Lord's Casde. After parking the car Charles suggested a stroll in the grounds before going into the hotel for their meal. He was still puzzled by Wayne's interest in Kerry and although he had not pursued the matter after Wayne left on Wednesday it was obvious by the odd glances he often sent in Kerry's direction that he was both curious and faintly jealous.

And so Kerry was not surprised when, as they walked together through the impressive grounds of the Casde, Charles suddenly broached the subject.

"Wayne Harvey appears to be rather more than ordinarily interested in you." Just a statement, but Charles turned his head interrogatingly. Kerry hesitated and then,, lightly,

"I don't know what you mean, Charles? He gave me a lift which was quite a normal action, seeing that he had a car and I hadn't."

"Normal? You think so? Kerry, Wayne Harvey doesn't give women lifts. If he happens to be out in his car it's more often than not on business. He has very little interest in women at any time, and virtually none at all when he's going about his business."

Kerry turned her head.

"What are you insinuating?" she inquired in a low vibrating tone.

"I'm not insinuating," was the swift, apologetic reply. "But I am puzzled. First, he took you outside when we last dined here, and then he gave you that lift." A pause, but as Kerry offered no comment he added, "His interest puzzles me exceedingly."

That final remark brought a smile to her lips.

"You're not very flattering, Charles - nor very diplomatic."

He raised his brows, evincing no sign at all of contrition.

"Physical attractions pass over Wayne Harvey's head -he rarely has eyes for feminine beauty. This has been proved over and over again." They had reached a bench and Charles invited Kerry to sit down. He took a seat beside her. "A man as rich and attractive as Wayne is always a target, and numerous beautiful females have set their caps at him. As he remarked, he's armed with a built-in protection -"

"Charles," interrupted Kerry softly, "why are you saying ail this?"

Another couple were passing them, strolling hand in hand under a tropical moon which must surely have been designed especially for lovers. Charles's eyes followed them until their dark silhouettes merged into a single indistinct shape as they stopped to kiss by the lake. Waiting for him to speak, Kerry knew he was carefully choosing his words and as the moments passed she found herself becoming impatient to hear them.

"You're too nice to be hurt, Kerry," he said at last in tones fringed with anxiety. "Will you mind if I'm outspoken?"

Although she flushed at this she was far too curious to bring the conversation to an abrupt end.

"Be as outspoken as you like, Charles." Her voice was pleasant but unemotional. Charles required careful handling. He desired to be more than a friend .
