Chapter Five

“Look. There she is.”

“Don’t point!”

I quickly dropped my hand, fighting a laugh.

Slowly, Adam peered over his shoulder. Melody glided across the room with her clique on her heels. If she started the year in their bad books for being Elite, they had forgiven her now.

Adam rose as she picked up her tray. I watched as he went over to her, said something, and walked next to her as she got her food. The two left the line and came over to our table together.

“Hi, Zeke,” she said as she pulled out the chair next to me. “How was your weekend?”

“It was good. I got my mom hooked on anime.”

Smiling, she rolled her eyes. “You boys and your anime. They’re just a bunch of cartoons.”

Yep. Us boys.

I stifled a giggle at my private joke. “Because we’re friends, I’ll let the cartoon thing slide.”

She laughed. “Anyway, I was just telling Adam about next Friday.”

Melody looked from side to side. This was her tell that club business was about to be spilled. She leaned across Adam, brushing up against his arm.

“We’re having our first protest at the basketball game.”

“The basketball game?”

She nodded. “We’ll make the posters this week during the club meeting. During the game, we’ll come in, take our seats, and hold up our End The Battle System posters.”

“Argyle will flip,” I said.

“She will, but we have a right to protest whether she likes it or not. Ours will be silent. We’re not going to scream, throw paint, or go where we’re not allowed, so she can’t say we’re being disruptive.” She looked between us. “What do you guys think? Are you in?”

“I’m in,” said Adam before I could open my mouth. “All this stuff with Zeke is just proof the system needs to be done away with. This school can have advanced classes like the rest of them do and leave it at that. They don’t need to go out of their way to make people feel different.”

Melody clapped the table. “Exactly. See, Adam, you get it. It’s a step too far and it’s bringing out the worst in people.”

“I’m in too,” I spoke up.

She beamed. “Thanks, guys.” Melody squeezed Adam’s arm. “I knew I could count on you. I’m going to sit with my friends, but I’ll see you at the meeting.”

I waved her off, waiting until she was out of earshot to speak. “Wow. She really does like you.”

“Wha— No! What?” His curls were bouncing as he roughly shook his head. “You can’t know that.”

“Of course I can.” I reached for my cup of peaches and speared a bite. “She touched your arm.”

“So?”

I gave him a knowing look. “She’s always touching you, brushing against your arm, squeezing your shoulder—all of it. She doesn’t touch me that much.”

A rosy-pink hue was staining his cheeks. No wonder Melody liked him. The guy was adorable.

“That doesn’t mean she likes me.”

“Yes, it does,” I said around a mouth full of peaches. “Trust me. I know women.”

“Oh yeah? How?”

I stopped chewing. Damn. My mouth gets Zeke into so much trouble.
