I sat in the back garden enjoying one of the last days of summer. They were quickly getting shorter and I wanted to try and get just a few more rays of sun, before the long English winter set in. I turned my body slightly, willing the sun to give me just a bit more of its power, hoping that my sexy tan lines would last at least until I could get away to Spain in January.

I was wearing my favorite little black bikini, which still fit me perfectly after 15 years. I remember buying it in Greece one summer, and reflected that at 47, I still had a body that could make younger men go a little weak. But the truth was, I could feel my age creeping up on me just a little. There was the occasional ache here and there, and staying up for really late nights was getting more and more difficult. But I refused to let it get to me. The old adage that you are only as young as you feel put me at about 32.

I was skimming through the Herald-Tribune, a paper I had started reading in my 30’s, which I found had the only good international coverage. Ever since skipping university and becoming a permanent expat from the States when I was 18, I had been trying to educate myself in any way possible. I would read anything I could get my hands on, and this helped in so many ways for me to eventually start writing, I noticed an article about an incident in Torremolinos involving a young American girl that had gotten in trouble with her Spanish boyfriend. Unexpectedly I was flooded with memories from my youth, understanding at once that I could have easily been this girl, with all the adventures and situations that I had put myself into. I got up to go make myself a cup of tea, the sun was fast retreating anyway, and my mind was wandering to places I had not thought about in years.
