CHAPTER 11

Ihadn't taken but two steps when suddenly a series of clicks reverberated in the hallway. And then it happened. Off to the side, a door creaked open.

"How did that happen?" Brittany asked. "I didn't see anyone pull a lever or anything."

"I didn't touch anything," her dad confirmed.

"Me neither," Leo chimed in.

I had my suspicions that Seth was letting us leave, but I didn't want to get their hopes up. "Let's see where it leads."

"It better not be another room," Iggy said.

I don't know what he had to complain about. I carried him for much of his adventure.

Jaxson led the way. A staircase was behind the door. Where it led, I didn't know.

"I smell air," Iggy announced.

"I hope you mean fresh air," I said.

At the top of the stairs, a small knot in my stomach formed. I wouldn't be surprised if this door was locked, and we had to figure out how to open it.

Jaxson twisted the knob, and when I heard it click, my pulse shot up. Jaxson pushed, but the door didn't budge. He twisted to the side and slammed his shoulder against the door.

It opened! "Yes!" I called.

The others whooped and clapped. We were finally free.

I made my way outside with the others, breathing a sigh of relief as we embraced in the open air. After being trapped inside Uncle Seth's mansion for so long, it felt liberating to be outside again.

"We did it!" Nora exclaimed, hugging her children tightly. "I can't believe we made it out of there."

"Me neither," I admitted. "Those hidden rooms and clues were intense. But it seems like we found enough information to keep investigating."

We had taken what we could carry out with us, but was it the critical information? I hoped we didn’t have to go back down there ever again.

"Don't forget the cryptic message about the lake shore. That's got to be our next stop,” Jaxson said.

“You're right," I replied. "The question is, which lake shore was Uncle Seth referring to? It could be the one here on the property, the shore in Witch's Cove, or maybe even in Seaside where GDI is located."

"I doubt Uncle Seth would put important information where that company could stumble upon it," Nora said.

"You're right. And along those lines, burying treasure on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico wouldn't be smart either considering the tides and the currents."

“I agree with Glinda and Nora,” Jaxson said. "I think we have the best chance of finding it on Seth's property."

Leo suddenly jumped up and down. "Oh man, I really gotta pee!" Before any of us could respond, he took off running back into the mansion.

Nora laughed and shook her head. "That boy...Anyway, since it's too dark to look for anything now, how about I whip up a late dinner for everyone? You all must be starving after the day we've had."

"That's so kind of you, but I think we'll just grab a bite at home," I told her politely. "It's been quite an exhausting adventure already.
