Sera waved at everyone as she exited the store, her mood lifted. Hope is a verb, she thought, not a noun.

Val followed her into the parking lot. “Hey, anything I should bring tomorrow?”

“An empty stomach,” she joked. “I think they’ve got more than enough on the menu, but then again, Mom never says no to dessert.”

“Double fudge brownies, my specialty, got it,” he said, and the door swung closed behind him.

A brief movement in the trees startled Sera. The twitch of leaves revealed itself to be a doe, nosing her way through the underbrush. On the walk home, Sera had all but forgotten the woman from the library and Caleb’s warning.

This eerie feeling returned. It started with the first sighting of Raphael in Prescott. The twin warnings from Raphael and Caleb coupled with the death of Seth made her edgy.

In mounting the porch steps, she realized how exposed they were.

She could see her mom through the front window, books, laptop, and papers spread over the breakfast table. At night, with the kitchen lights on, they were in a fishbowl, lulled by a false sense of security. Anyone could come by and watch the twosome in their evening activities, studying them, waiting.

That was the thing about a small town, fewer witnesses.
