CHAPTER 7

Nick

“Honey, we should get going.” Sophie nudged Liam. “Alina looks tired.”

It was close to eight, and we’d spent the entire day with Liam and Sophie. It’d been fun, and I loved how excited Alina was to be at the farmer’s market, but the trip to the market and then making dinner, despite how much the three of us had helped with it, had worn her out.

I studied Alina as she struggled to stand up from the armchair. Liam jumped up from the couch and hurried over, helping her out of the chair and steadying her when she swayed slightly. A stupid bout of jealousy washed over me. I wanted to be in Liam’s place and be the one she turned to when she needed a little extra help.

“You okay, Alina?” Liam asked.

She nodded, but her face was pale, and little pain lines were etched around her mouth. “Yes. Just tired, and my leg is aching.”

“I’m sorry,” Sophie said. “The farmer’s market was too much.”

“It wasn’t,” Alina said. “I loved it, and I had a lot of fun. Thank you for suggesting it, Sophie.”

Sophie gave Liam a worried look who said, “Maybe we should spend the night, in case you need -”

“I can help her,” I said.

Liam glanced over. “You don’t mind?”

“Why would I?” I asked.

Before he could reply, Alina said, “I’m fine. I don’t need anyone helping me tonight.”

“Do you have a headache?” Liam asked.

She glanced away. “No.”

She was lying, it was obvious, but Liam just nodded and said, “We’ll get out of your hair so you can rest. Nick, take good care of our baby sister, yeah?”

I winced inwardly but nodded. “I will.”

“Alina, stay in the chair,” Liam said.

Alina shook her head. “I’m fine, Liam. Stop fussing.” She followed them to the door, and my concern for her grew. I hadn’t seen her limp this badly in years.

Liam kissed Alina’s cheek. “I’ll come over around ten tomorrow, and we’ll try car therapy, okay?”

Alina paled but nodded. “Yes. I’ll see you then.”

We said our goodbyes and as soon Alina shut and locked the front door, I carefully picked her up and headed toward the bedroom.

“Someone’s impatient to pick up where we left off.” Alina smiled at me, but it looked forced and unnatural. I carried her into her bedroom and then into the attached bathroom. I used my foot to close the toilet lid before setting her down on it.

“Nick, what are you doing?” she asked when I started the water in the tub.

“Drawing you a hot bath.” I turned around to catch her rubbing at her forehead, a sure sign she had a headache.

She dropped her hand and smiled at me. “Will you be joining me? I’m good with that. Although with my leg, I can’t actually have sex in the tub, but we can do other stuff, right?”

“You’re having a bath, taking some meds for your leg and your headache, and going to bed,” I said.

“I don’t have a headache,” she argued.

“Baby, don’t lie to me, okay?” I said.
