A shriek echoed off the cinder-block walls and wood floors.

Graham bolted to his feet to see what was happening, but the darkness that enveloped him and the gym made it impossible.

Leverone bumped into Graham and asked, “You heard that too?”

“Yeah.”

The others in the room began to stir and mutter.

“Where did it come from?” Graham asked.

“Not sure,” Leverone replied.

From the darkness a hand reached out and touched Graham, causing him to jump.

“Sorry, it’s Laura,” she said quietly.

“Did you hear that too?” Graham asked.

“One of the other women told me they took someone,” Laura replied.

“Sssh!” came from several people in the room following Graham’s loud outburst.

Another hand reached from the shadows and snatched Graham’s arm. “Be quiet.”

“Who is that?” he asked.

“It doesn’t matter who, but keep your voice down,” Phyllis replied.

Graham leaned in to see the face of the person. The moon’s light came through several high windows above the bleachers on the far wall and gave him a glimpse of the elderly woman he’d talked to earlier.

“Why?” Graham asked.

“Because you’ll piss them off. They might take others. Just stop causing trouble,” she chastised.

“All I—”

“Never mind your stupid opinion, just keep your mouth shut. You’ve proven to be incompetent as it is, hence why you’re stuck in here with the rest of us. Enough bravado, you’ll get more of us raped and killed.”

“Easy, grandma, don’t blame me for those assholes’ actions,” Graham defended himself.

“I’m not blaming you, just sayin’ keep your voice down or, better yet, shut up. And your damn fool idea of escape is plain dumb.”

“What’s your suggestion, then?” Graham countered.

She shook her head and marched off. Under her breath she muttered, “Damn fools.”

Laura leaned in close to Graham and whispered, “Something tells me she’s not going to help us.”

“Whatever gave you that idea?” Graham joked.

“I don’t trust that old bitch,” Leverone commented.

“She’s harmless. I imagine she’s upset about her husband is all,” Graham said.

“I heard she was a bitch before they hung him,” Laura informed them.

“Sssh!” again came from several people in the room.

Unable to control himself, Graham loudly said, “Fuck you.”

Laura hit his arm.

A flashlight clicked on near the door and the long beam searched the room until it settled on Graham.

“Be quiet!” the guard barked.

Graham waved and was about to show him his middle finger but found the discipline to refrain from escalating the situation.

“We should sit down,” Laura suggested.

“Agreed,” Leverone said and did.

“I’ll talk to you in the morning,” Laura said and stepped off.

The flashlight beam clicked off.

“Psst,” Graham said, trying to get Laura’s attention.

She returned and asked, “What?”

Graham took her by the arm and motioned for her to kneel with him. He pulled out his wallet and from a back compartment removed a credit-card-sized object and handed it to her.

She felt the heavy plastic and metal object and asked, “What is it?”

“A credit-card knife.”

“A what?”

He grabbed it back, flipped the short two-inch blade out and folded in the hard plastic edges to make the handle. He handed it back to her and said, “Looks like a credit card but folds into a knife.
